If I Had a Father by George MacDonald (1824 - 1905).

This project is now complete and can be found in our catalog at: https://librivox.org/if-i-had-a-father-by-george-macdonald/

Arthur Gervaise, a London sculptor, learns too late of his love for a woman, while his absentee father secretly tries to serve and help him. Meanwhile, an old country man searches frantically for his daughter, whose disappearance he suspects Arthur has something to do with. These two fathers' devotion to their adult children causes those around them to reevaluate and elevate their own ideas of fatherhood. (Devorah Allen)
    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/9191
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'm excited to be BCing my first full length play! I believe that Kitty said she would MC this.

As the play does not include a Dramatis Personae, I've compiled my own informal one, just to help potential players decide which character they'd like to take on:

ARTHUR GERVAISE, a sculptor, in love with Constance (Edit: Spends most of the play delirious and raving)
WARREN, Arthur's friend
CONSTANCE, a young woman, rescued as a child from the slums of London
WATERFIELD, engaged to Constance
COLONEL GERVAISE, Arthur's father, whom Arthur has not seen since the age of two. Currently masquerading as Arthur's serving man
MRS. CLIFFORD, Col. Gervaise's sister and Arthur's aunt
JAMES, Servant to Mrs. Clifford
MATTIE, poor and honest seamstress, employed by Mrs. Clifford
SUSAN, poor and rather rough seamstress who works with Mattie. Has a quick temper!
THOMAS, Mattie's father, a Lancashire man. Dialogue is difficult to decipher, as it it written in a phonetic Lancashire brogue. If you need help figuring out what the heck he's saying, I am willing and mostly able to provide it. Please do not claim this role unless you think you can do a semi-convincing accent.
BILL, young London street boy, friend of Mattie
JACK, young London street boy, friend of Bill
JIM, young London street boy, friend of Bill
FIRST, SECOND, THIRD, AND FOURTH BOY, young street boys who abuse and insult Thomas
POLICEMAN. Umm, he's a policeman.

Let's get this show on the road!

You got it! Oh, and also, so no one will claim her while I'm sleeping, I'm going to read for Mattie. :)

is there a special reason why second and fourth boy should be the same reader ? :hmm:

Not really, except that the Fourth Boy really only has two lines, and from what I've seen, it's often difficult to get those smaller roles filled in. The dialogue will still flow well with only three boys, and for the sake of simplicity I thought we might easily cut one. But I don't mind separating them again, if you think we'd be able to fill them.
