Colonel Chabert by Honoré de Balzac (1799 - 1850). Translated by Clara Bell (1835 - 1927) and others

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/colonel-chabert-by-honore-de-balzac/

Colonel Chabert is a soldier, who goes missing during the Napoleonic wars, and then returns from the dead, most inconveniently for his wife, who has remarried and has gone up in the world. This novella by Balzac lays bare the venality of the French Restoration period. It has been filmed several times, most recently in the 1994 version, starring Gerard Depardieu. ( Nicole Lee)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1954
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Nicole:

One tiny thing in Section 4; At 15:35, the phrase "the expenses of the" is repeated. The original is at 15:33.

Many thanks,
