  2. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  3. The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of Pierre, or The Ambiguities by Herman Melville . This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"Pierre, or The Ambiguities by Herman Melville. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of Pierre, or The Ambiguities by Herman Melville. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"

    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Pierre, or The Ambiguities by Herman Melville , by Herman Melville. "

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.

  4. Example filename pierre_##_melville_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. pierre_01_melville_128kb.mp3)

  5. Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

Naduplants,
I'd be happy to MC this for you. I'll be back in a bit with your MW and further instructions.

OK, you are set up. Good job filling out the template generator. I made a couple of changes. You requested 144 sections, I cut that down to 26 because that's how many chapters the book has. And when you fill in the form, no need to add the author to the title field, there's a separate field for the author.

For a solo project, you are the Book Coordinator. That means you fill out the Magic Window and post your links and times in the window when you upload your files. You'll need to start by entering section (or chapter) titles. I've put in a couple just to get you started. The system adds the section number to the beginning of whatever you type in the MW.

You'll need to start by logging into the magic window. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!) Please be sure to read all of the BC How To document, as that will give you more information on your role as a BC.

If you have questions, or if you have any trouble with the instructions in the BC how to, please post and we'll work through it together. There is a bit of a learning curve when you do your first solo. You've picked a nice size book - not too long and something that you are interested in, so it should be a manageable and enjoyable process for you.

Thank you MaryAnn!

I put 114 chapters because while there are 26 books, each book has 3-7 chapters. But I think most of the chapters are short enough that I can read them in one recording.

I'll be putting up recordings soon

I see.

I checked Book 1 -- 7800 words would be about 50-55 minutes of recording. If you want to split some of the books, that's fine. You can make those decisions and fill in the MW as you go. If you need more sections, you can add them using the button at the top of the MW.

OK, We'll move over to "going solo" at this point. If no one comes along as DPL by the time you have recorded a section or two, we can advertise on Listeners Wanted.

If you need to add a section, it will appear at the bottom of the MW. You can then click and drag it to where you need it.

Enjoy!

Jim,

I could swear that I had posted about adding you to the MW, but I don't see the post now that I am home, except you either can read my mind, or the post was there at some time, because you thanked me.

How odd.

Anyway, . . . GREAT to have you on board!

Interesting. I saw it in MW as it is now. Prescient? As you say, anyway, I am looking forward to it--I am a Melville man.
Thanks, MaryAnn

I recorded Book 1 and Book 2. Book 2 was over 74 minutes so I broke it into 2 sections.

Section 1 - 1:01:26

Section 2 - 38:50

Section 3- 39:47

Good job, Nadu. Book one is PLOK. I was intrigued by the very odd relationship between mother and son. Jim

Chapter 2, Part 1 is wonderful. Melville certainly creates an enchanted world here, which your voice and pace renders well. There were a few minor issues, which I am inclined to leave to your discretion. In other words, if you do not think they distract sufficiently to change, I will accept the reading as is and OK it.

At 1:54 and 3:14, there is a b-b-b-b-b sound that pops up--but very briefly.

And there is the slightest repeat at 4:31 "the sup, the superb fellows."

I am obligated for the standard PL to note repeats and background noise, but for the most part the editing is required if these things interfere with the reading. Let me know what you want to do.
Jim
