And Even Now by Max Beerbohm (1872 - 1956).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/and-even-now-by-max-beerbohm/
This is a diverse collection of essays by English writer Max Beerbohm, whose circle included such notables as Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Ezra Pound, and Somerset Maugham. Much of Beerbohm's work was humorous, including parodies of various aspects of the upper class life into which he was born.

Some of these pieces are humorous, some philosophical, and some even sad. They include, for instance: a frankly self-critical piece on the pomposity and self-importance of his early literary ambitions; a half-eager, half-repining essay on a missing and uncompleted portrait of the great German writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe; and a funny, but politically critical essay on "the servant question."

(Summary by Kirsten Wever.)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/1956/1956-h/1956-h.htm
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I was just going to ask about DPL. I've changed the OP to read Max Beerbohm throughout, somehow Beerbohm, Max got in there in spots.

Sorry if I'm doing this wrong - I thought I remembered pasting this link into the MW ... but maybe not.

Anyhow, here's Section 1 ready for PLing.

Time: 18:54.

[filename edited by MC]

Tricia - no pressure to give critique, but I've mutually critiqued - pretty strenuously - with Cate Barratt, whose style and mine are extremely different - as are yours and mine. And this gave us each really interesting light on our own work and - we both agreed - improved us both.

So be as ruthless as you want - I promise not to balk - I just want to learn (and anyhow, you may have suggestions I decide not to adopt). Early on I learned to you about breathing while recording ... maybe you have thoughts about timing, intonation, tone, or lots of other things, being, as you are, a pro. (I LOVE the way you do humor.)

Now I'll see if I can enter the like and time of this recording in the MW... We'll see!

Thanks in advance,

Kirsten

Thanks Kirsten, be sure to use double digits _01 etc in the filenames, they will be out of order otherwise.
I've changed that one to avoid another upload.
Welcome aboard Tricia. :D
(Tricia can be ruthless at times)

We are moving over to Going Solo.

Will PL later.

Funny - I don't have any conscious techniques. I just sit down and read. (OK, so I am somewhat sensitive of my timing. That and trying to give a character the same voice throughout the book is about all the conscious technique I'm aware of!)

First section: it's exported as variable bit rate; needs to be 128 kbps Constant.

Otherwise it's A-OK. I cannot think of any suggestions or criticisms. :) Great job on the French!

Time in "notes" - yes.
URL in MW - yes.
URL in posted message - up to you. :) It's definitely more convenient than going to the MW for it, but I also like clicking on the one in the MW to make sure it works, so that cataloging goes easier.

Here's the link to the new constant bit rate Section 1 -- please post in MW for me, because I'm afraid of creating some technical nightmare if I go trying to replace things. Thanks!

I've also posted 2 and 4 - both blatantly overt satire ... enjoy!

No need to worry, the uploader renames the original file, so the present link in the MW will link to your new upload.
* to tidy up the MW it is best to use the drop down menu to label the new files "Ready for PL" :)
Thanks.
