All for Love; or, The World Well Lost by John Dryden (1631 - 1700).
<i>All for Love</i> is widely considered to be John Dryden's finest work, dramatic or otherwise. A tragedy written in blank verse, it retells the story of Roman general Marc Antony's love affair with the alluring Egyptian queen Cleopatra and their eventual double-suicide. Compared to the more famous rendition of the tale by William Shakespeare, however, which is grand and hectic in terms of setting, Dryden chooses instead to focus in on the lovers' last days in Alexandria as the threat of their defeat looms and their legacies are contested. The result is a swelling, elegant, emotional drama that perceptively considers such themes as loyalty and love, fidelity in marriage, the lasting endurance of friendship, and even the tenuous construct of masculinity. In short, it's truly a gem of the Restoration repertoire. ( Tomas Peter)
This project is complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page at http://librivox.org/all-for-love-or-the-world-well-lost-by-john-dryden/

All roles will be gender neutral, except where noted in the MW. Please read ONLY from the script links in the MW!

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2062
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Here is the cast of characters and their accompanying pronunciations. I'm going to claim the role of Antony and Elizabby will be Cleopatra. Every other role is free to claim as soon as the MW is populated. However, if you possibly can't wait until then, I'll allow you to "express an interest" in your preferred role, lol.

Gender-perfect casting

(M) MARC ANTONY [MARK-AN-TUH-NEE]. Defeated, in despair, in love with Cleopatra to the last. Appears in all acts -- WiltedScribe / Tomas Peter

(F) CLEOPATRA [KLEE-OH-PAT-RUH], Queen of Egypt, in love with Mark Antony. Appears in Acts II-V -- Elizabby / Beth Thomas

(M) VENTIDIUS [VEN-TID-EE-YUS], Antony’s general and best friend, an older man who encourages Mark Antony to fight again when he despairs. Hates Cleopatra, and schemes to ruin her. Appears in all acts -- unreadpages / Peter Tucker

(F) ALEXAS [UH-LEX-US], the Queen's eunuch and the play's villain, serves Cleopatra, dislikes Ventidius and schemes to make Antony jealous by encouraging Cleopatra to pretend to be in love with Dolabella (actually a man, but because we need a high-pitched voice, we'll be casting a female reader). Appears in all acts -- DaMa / Dafni Ma

(F) OCTAVIA [OK-TAY-VEE-YUH], Antony's wife and mother of their two daughters. Faithful to Antony through his affair with Cleopatra. Sister of Julius Caesar, she pleads with her brother to pardon and spare Antony. A bonus: she has a great verbal catfight with Cleopatra late in the play! Appears in Acts III & IV -- Kitty / Sonia

(M) DOLABELLA [DOLE-UH-BELL-UH], Antony’s estranged friend who previously made advances on Cleopatra against Antony's wishes. Known to be a smooth talker, Antony chooses him to tell Cleopatra he is leaving her after their reconciliation. Appears in Acts III & IV -- pschempf / Phil Schempf

(F) CHARMION [KAR-MEE-YUN], Cleopatra's maid. Appears in Acts II-V -- leanneyauyau / Leanne Yau

(F) IRAS [EYE-RUS], Cleopatra's maid. Appears in Acts II-V -- MrsHand / KHand

Gender-neutral casting

SERAPION [SER-APE-EE-YUN], Priest of Isis. Appears in Acts I & V -- alanmapstone

GENTLEMAN 1, Antony’s servant (11 lines) Appears in Act I -- MikeyHaz / Mike Harris

MYRIS [MEE-RIS], a Priest. (6 lines) Appears in Acts I & V -- ChuckW / Chuck Williamson

GENTLEMAN 2, Antony’s servant (2 lines) Appears in Act I -- ToddHW / Todd

AGRIPPINA [AH-GRIP-EE-NA] and ANTONIA [AN-TUN-EE-YUH] - Antony's two little daughters. (one line only, spoken together) Appear in Act III -- Zoe Trang and Jenna Eleni

NARRATION -- Rob Board

I won't be able to set this up until tomorrow.

I can't record these days and so will not be taking on any role.

Thanks, Todd

Thanks for letting me know, Todd. Whenever you're able to resume recording, and if there are still roles available, I hope you'll consider claiming something then.

Hi Tomas

well, if pre-claims are already allowed, I'd like to play Octavia, the spurned wife then. Don't think I'll go easy on you  she is a proud Roman after all.

Still, I will wait for all my equipment to be back together, which will still be a few days.

MW available for setup.

There is some non-functioning HTML code in the summary blurb - I don't know how to fix that.

Thanks, Todd

Thanks Todd. The HTML does not work for the forum, but it does in the catalogue. I used italics for a recently-catalogued project and it showed up just fine.

The MW is now populated, so we are now open for business and accepting claims!!

Great! I'd like to claim Antonia and Agrippina for my daughters JennaEleni and ZoeTrang please. I'll be posting their recorded lines, so don't worry that they don't have any forum posts under their own names.

Awesome! I've added them to the MW---though I guess it doesn't matter about the exact characters they'll do? You can change their roles if needed. :)

Yes, thanks Peter! Honoured to have you onboard for this! :)

We now have 8 (potentially 10) individual roles left up for grabs, including a major female role and two substantial supporting ones. Interested male readers can still claim one of the priests, one of the gentlemen, or a narrator position (stage directions, prologue or epilogue---or all three, since there are not many stage directions to begin with).
