Belle Vue Zoological Gardens by Various ( - ).

Guides to the Belle Vue Zoological Gardens from the Chetham's Library Virtual Belle Vue Collection. The Belle Vue gardens opened in 1836 as a place of genteel entertainment for the middle classes of industrial Manchester, but soon became one the most popular attractions in the north of England. The 1891 guide details the animals on view and the features of the amusement park. The 1917 guide notes the addition of new snake and ape houses, attractions such as Laughterland and a Figure of 8 Toboggan, and the Kings Hall, which hosted major concerts and sporting events through to the 1970s. The addition of a car park to the stabling for visitors who arrived with their own horse and carriage marked the passing of the years, yet the price of a cup of tea remained the same. Evening entertainments, featuring tableaux and firework displays against the backdrop of a painting erected on a 60 by 100 foot frame on the Picture Lake, were a popular feature. In the 1890s these entertainments documented military exploits from the heyday of British imperialism. In 1917 war was closer at hand. The evening entertainment of that year, commemorating the tank battle of the Ancre, was evidently a sombre affair that reflected the uncertainties of popular entertainment in the final years of the 1914-18 war. IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'll set it up - back soon

You have a MW . In something like this I think it's better to leave chapter out of the intro and outro - use section # at beginning and end and say what you are reading then seems to work best.

Thanks, Anne. Sorry, that's just my poor editing of the post  I'll just read 'Part # of the Belle Vue Zoological Gardens', etc.

For the author, I put 'Various', but I am sure if that's right, as it isn't really a collection by different authors.

various would be OK but maybe unknown would be better ? Various sort of implies that the listener could find out who they are if they really wanted to :D

Part one uploaded. Betty, I hope you can stay awake during the cab fare list at the end!

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/bellevue_01_unknown.mp3 - 54:11

A couple of points

The whole of this guide would be over 70 minutes, so I have split it by taking out 'The Battle of Inkerman' from the middle, which I am planning to include in Part Two as one of three 'Evening Entertainments' (i.e. all three battles in one recording). Part Three will be the full 1917 guide, which does not have an evening entertainment section. Everything will be recorded, but the length of the three parts will be evened out. Does that sound okay?

Also, there are a few oddities that I have ironed out. Especially, I have interpreted the cage numbers with no number next to them as a group of cages for the nearest animal (the alternative could be that the cages are empty!). There is one item on the price list (Amontillado) that seems to have two prices for the same item (I have read it as such). Lastly, I have posted on the help forum about the pronunciation of 'Tuer', which I have read as 'Tooer' but suspect should be 'Chewer' (similar to the name Tueart)

Hi,
I've PL'ed part 1 and there is a glitch.

Starting At 7:27 you omitted all the text on page 5 of the pdf which starts with “37, 38, Bed Tiger cat from west Africa.”
(The numbering in your reading currently goes from 36 and skips directly to 52)

Everything else in the reading is very fine. And reading all the locations and prices can't have been easy.

Whoops! Thank you for noticing that rather glaring mistake, Betty.

Part 1 corrected and I have also uploaded Part 2, which includes the section from the 1891 guide on the battle of inkerman and then the two standalone evening entertainment texts.

Hi,
Section 1 is now PL OK!

Section 2 has a couple of glitches:
at 13:20 missed edit stumble/then correction in “their pouches were emptying fast, as their ammunition became expanded

At 26:57 stumble/repeat in “to the Gardens, with names of the animals and birds."

Also the link in the MW for section 2 currently is for section 1.

The description of the fighting was graphic.

Thank you, Betty.

I hope you didn't find the battle scenes disturbing - I know that they can be for some. I really didn't expect them when I decided to read this one!

The remaining guide will be a little while in coming - I have just recorded it and it was close to two hours of recording!

All the best,

Phil

Hi Betty,

I have re-organized things a bit, mainly because the 1917 guide was so long and went way over the 70 minute mark. Part 2 is now the 1917 guide up to the evening entertainment. I have added the evening entertainment to the others (now Part 4). I have also combined the price lists from the 1891 and 1917 guides (Part 3).

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/bellevue_01_unknown.mp3 - 43:10 - PL OK but a bit shorter than it was
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/bellevue_02_unknown.mp3 - 66:13 - Ready for PL.
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/bellevue_03_unknown.mp3 - 27:58 - Needs PL from 13:30 onwards
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/bellevue_04_unknown.mp3 - 39:38 - Needs PL from 35:50 onwards

I hope that makes sense - if not, please let me know!

Phil
