The Mikado by W. S. Gilbert (1836 - 1911).

This project is now complete. All files can be downloaded from the catalog page here: https://librivox.org/the-mikado-by-w-s-gilbert-2/[/color]
In the town of Titipu, flirting is punishable by death on the command of the Mikado himself! But what happens when the Lord High Executioner is himself condemned to die? And what secret does the wandering minstrel Nanki-Poo hide, that the Mikado and his entire entourage come to witness his execution? <br><br>"The Mikado" premiered in 1885, when it broke all records for the longest-running musical. It remains arguably the most popular of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. Occasionally described as "English ladies with knitting needles in their hair", Gilbert disguised his criticism of British politics by the (ostensibly) Japanese setting. The universal themes of love and death have kept this opera in constant production for over 125 years. This is a spoken "poetic" version of the libretto written by W. S. Gilbert, where a full cast of voices brings the sparkling wit of Gilbert to the fore, and will enhance understanding and appreciation of this comic light opera. (Beth Thomas)

  • This will be a "poetic" reading with NO SINGING (it's too difficult to coordinate). Gender correct casting please. If you are in a chorus role, please listen to my "template" before recording. You don't have to match exactly, but it's helpful to the editor if the pace and timing isn't too wildly different! The template will also include some pronunciations of the Japanese - if you find more, please ask! (I speak Japanese.)

No, this will be complicated so it's better if I DPL it myself. I know how it's supposed to sound!

Yes please - I've messaged the people who took part in "Iolanthe" and invited them to look in the Launch Pad for this new production, so I hope we are still here when they look!

Kristingj is editing, so could you please add her for MW access as well?

Don't wish to be too eager, but this seems a very interesting project and I'd love to be a part of it! Since I'm a young man who has some singing experience as a tenor (though I know no singing is involved here), I think the role of Nanki-Poo would be the one most suited to me. Unless you have someone else in mind, could I take a stab at him? :)

Elizabeth,

I've started recording the wonderfully pompous Pooh Bah (whose name makes me think of A.A. Milne! "Hush, Hush - Nobody cares: Christopher Robin has fallen downstairs.").

Could you post your template for the choruses, please?

Hi Peter, you're so quick! Tomorrow morning I should be able to post them - I've had a long day at work and it's nearly midnight here now...

Also, just FYI, I've been listening to your recording of "Alice in Wonderland" and it is fabulous! I love the voices! I hope you did "Looking Glass" as well! :9:

Thanks, Elizabeth.

I did enjoy recording Alice; I think my favourite character was the Cheshire Cat. One of the advantages of Alice over other novels is that the voices can be caricatures, rather than serious efforts to create different personality voices. I tend to read only short stories now, which only have a few characters to be differentiated by voice .... it's much too much like hard work making different voices. Even in Alice, I don't think I separated the King and Queen of Hearts enough.

Making up tunes and singing the songs was fun.

Although I've done a few chapters of Through the Looking Glass, and did the White Knight in the DR of it, I'd never thought of reading it as a solo. I might have a go when I finish my current, rather dull, mathematical/philosophical one.

May I have Peep-Bo please? When you said that Katisha is said 'Katishar', did you mean in the Australian (Not American) pronunciation of 'r'? I speak a little bit of Japanese, so are you saying that you just say the last 'a' like a normal Japanese 'a'?
