Short Ghost and Horror Story Collection Vol. 022
This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/short-ghost-and-horror-collection-022-by-various/

NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.
  1. How to submit a story, and 'how it all works' here
Please select and record any short ghost or horror story in the public domain. Try to stick to works that run less than 60 minutes. There is no need to "sign-up" before recording... as long as the work is clearly in the public domain, just start recording. Multiple versions are always welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your selection already; we're happy to hear your version too. :)

A ghost or horror story should have something of an otherworldly or gruesome nature at its core. (Preferably, it should be nominally fictional, but there are enough 'true' ghost stories that will be accepted into this collection as well.) Take a look at the various collections in this forum and decide which collection your story would work best in.

Please note that a lot of Lovecraft's work is still under copyright - there's a thread here that has an up-to-date list of confirmed PD stories.

Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which story you are submitting to the collection. Please include all this information:

    • link to the text source
    • author name
    • title of the story
    • duration (runtime) of the file
    • if this is your first recording: how you would like to be listed in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal web site/blog.

Read points 5. to 7. below for what to do before, during and after your recording, and how to send your file.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
No. This collection will be open until it is full (20 stories have been submitted), at which point another one may be started.
  4. Where can I find horror and ghost stories?
Good sources for ghost and horror stories are Literary Gothic and Classic Horror Short Stories. Of course there will also be bunches on Gutenberg.

Previous Short Ghost and Horror Collections can be found here - duplicate versions are fine, though preferably not in the same volume.
  5. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  6. DURING recording:
Leave no more than 0.5-1 second of silence at the beginning of your file.
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "[Story title] by [Author name]. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
      "[Story title] by [Author name]."
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Story Title]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
  7. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit (optional).

The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
File Name: (lower case, separated by underscores):

    ghohor022_shorttitleinoneword_author_readersinitials.mp3, e.g. ghohor022_roomintower_benson_ce.mp3

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    - Title/Name: [Story Title] (e.g. The Room in the Tower)
    - Artist: [Author Name] (e.g. E.F. Benson)
    - Album: LibriVox Short Ghost and Horror Story Collection Vol. 022

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me.

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi,

Sorry if this is a stupid question (new reader here) but what do we put for the reader's initials section of the file name?

Hi, Lucretia--Welcome to LibriVox! I'm going to jump in and answer your question (not a stupid question at all, by the way) because I really love your name! I don't often see that name--it's not terribly common, is it?

The reader's initials are just the initials of your first and last name--like "lk" or whatever. We don't have any files submitted here yet, or you could have seen some examples of file names. So it would be something like "ghohor022_roomintower_benson_lk.mp3".

Let us know if you have any other questions--there are lots of friendly people around here who will be happy to assist you! :)
Kind regards,
Lucretia

Thanks so much, Lucretia! I love your name, too.

And you're right, it is a very unusual name. I've only met a handful of other people who share it over the years.

Hi, poojadsr--Nice job on the first story for this collection! I have just a couple of things for you to correct--

Section 01 (The Treasure Ship):
--At ~7:37 there is a repeat "The Villa Sub-Rosa--The Villa Sub-Rose would sound rather quaint..."
--There is less than one second of silence at the end of the recording. We need 5 seconds of silence at the end.
--Since you will be uploading again, could you please correct the Album Title in the ID3 tags so that it shows "Vol. 022" instead of 021?

And I should let you know that you still have quite a few popping P's (plosives) in your recording. I think that this recording is still acceptable, but in the future, please try pushing the microphone a bit farther away from your mouth and also to the side. It will help to correct the problem if your breath goes past the microphone instead of hitting it directly.

Post here when you have made the corrections, and let us know the new length of the track--then I'll check it. Thanks again! :)
Kind regards,
Lucretia

Hi Bart and Lucretia,
I thought I might try my hand (or should that be voice) at Martin's Close by M.R. Jameshttp://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/9629/pg9629.txt, but I wanted to ask your advice on a point: As you will see a large part of the text takes the form of a court case, with different characters taking turns to speak; these are preceded by their name or title (e.g. LCJ or Pris and Att. Gen); Do you think these should be spoken on each occasion? I have had a bash at this and it does sound a little odd, any thoughts?
Best regards,
Andy (Ansam)

In principle we read the book as is. We do not change anything.
