Samuel the Seeker by Upton Sinclair (1878 - 1968) .

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page:http://librivox.org/samuel-the-seeker-by-upton-sinclair/

Volunteers outside the USA: Upton Sinclair died in 1968. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955) or Canada (author's death plus 50 years).
What would happen to you if you tried to make your way in the world believing all the clear, simple things you had ever been taught growing up? Here we have one response to that question, a commentary by the great novelist, journalist and political activist Upton Sinclair, on what we are to encounter as we make our way in this world we live in. It is set against the backdrop of its time (about a hundred years ago) and place (a capitalist microcosm called "Lockmanville" in upstate New York) and the viewpoint of its author. Young Samuel Prescott, having been robbed penniless, encounters the expected cast of characters, from the fiendish and jaded Capitalists to the sainted Socialists, with the righteous religious and the purchased politicians and police along the way, all perched upon the backs and shoulders of the poor and the powerless. But we can all find ourselves in here somewhere, and seek for the truth and the way forward. (Summary by D Pranitis)
  • Target completion date: 2013-Oct-31
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/5961
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Dear Laura, I'm not sure what the term "standard" means when they ask what level of proof-listening is requested. These audiobooks are all about the defenseless author and the listener, not the reader, so I hope you'll feel free to make whatever suggestions you think might improve the value of the piece, within the limitations of my chintzy microphone and untrained voice, anyway. Thanks,

Incidentally, Laura, I need to add "keywords" that describe this book, so as you listen, if you think of a keyword or two that you think would describe it to other listeners, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts.

Hi Dave,

Standard listening is mostly just listening for repeats or things that just don't sound quite right, but the proof listener isn't required to follow along with the text. I generally do follow along with the text and your readings were word perfect. Your narration and the sound quality of your files is Excellent and a pleasure to listen to!

As I'm listening I'll keep in mind any keywords I think might be helpful.

And...having said all that... Chapters 1-3 are all PL OK and I will listen to chapter 4 tomorrow evening. Thanks so much for having me along on this project.

Chapter 4 is PL OK. It has nearly 12 seconds of silence at the end but only needs 5 since it's under 30 minutes.

Thank you, I forgot to trim that one I guess. I noticed there was spare silence at the front end too.

Here is the revised file:
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/alg/samueltheseeker_04_sinclair.mp3

with a new running time of 17:45.
