New Adventures of Alice by John Rae (1882 -1963 ) .

This project is complete and all audio files can be found in our catalog at http://librivox.org/new-adventures-of-alice-by-john-rae/

Quote:
After reading and re-reading the book many time as a boy and wishing that Lewis Carroll would have written another Alice In Wonderland Book, John Rae began imagining what that girl would have gotten up to if he had done so. Telling these stories to his children over the years, where they were enthusiastically received, he finally decided to share them with the world. And here they are! The New Adventures of Alice(Summary by Phil Chenevert)

  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.
Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.childrensbooksonline.org/New_Adventures_of_Alice/index.htm

For best viewing, open the link provided for each section in a new tab and give it time to load.
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

    Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Keywords that describe the book:
  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:

    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  7. DURING recording:
Please leave no more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!

Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Chapter [number] of The New Adventures of Alice. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
" The New Adventures of Alice , by John Rae . [Chapter]"
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The New Adventures of Alice , by John Rae . "
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    newadventuresofalice_##_rae.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. newadventuresofalice_01_rae.mp3)

    [b]ID3 V2 tags

(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    Title: ## - [Section title]
    Artist: John Rae
    Album: New Adventures of Alice

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader:
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: phi - philchenevert
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. :)

Hello! We're a group of honors students who would like to do a recording for LibriVox as a service project. We're new to this forum but we think Section 02 sounds like exactly what we're looking for! Is it alright if we have a different person reading on each page? We'll pause the recording while we're rearranging ourselves to avoid any noticeable shuffling sounds and breaks. Also our pseudonym would probably just be our username. Thanks for any information you can give us!

Welcome to LibriVox and it is certainly OK with me that you read this as a 'group' thing. I will assign section two to you. Of course there may be some rule or regulation that will stand in the way of a group reading a page each and I will check with more experienced people, but with that caveat, you are welcome to start recording.

Will there be someone who can do the editing? Here is a video on the way our forums work The LibriVox recording process: Is it Magic? and Getting To Know Our Forums
and there are lots more videos in my sig link. Some of them are even useful.

Assuming this procedure (which is very unusual for LV) can be done, understand that the finished chapter should be edited, noise reduced, bloopers (and there will be lots) removed, etc. before it is uploaded so that the thousands of listeners to this book will have a chapter that is nice to listen to. The differences in volume of different readers may cause problems. Please ask for any help you wish, I am here to help.

Chapter 2, right? Bunberry Cross? Image

Awesome! We will work on editing everyone's recordings together after we record in class tomorrow and hopefully get it to LibriVox standards! We will contact you with any further questions and we will take Chapter 2 then! Thanks for your help!

Great. Please be patient if there are edits and things we want you to correct. And try to have everyone sit in the same place and the same distance from the microphone to keep the volume as equal as possible. And of course try for NO background noise at all while they are recording; NO whispering, no one walking around, no doors closing, stuff like that OK? because the microphone will pick it up and it is impossible to remove. If you pause between recorders, there will be only one track which is easier to edit. If you stop, it will try to make another track so use Append Record to keep on the same track. I expect great things from you! and so does grommit Image

I forgot to ask about the age of the recorders. We cannot have anyone record who is not 14 or older without parental permission. And to do that we may need all recorders to register so they can agree to the disclaimer. Also everyone must understand the Public Domain concept; that everything they record is available for anyone to use in whatever way they wish. Other adiminstrators have pointed out these and other potential problems, but let's take them one at a time.

The more I think about it, the more it seems better to set up a project just for FHPSectionH2. Let's see how the recording goes and we will proceed from there.

Sounds good! And yes, all students are in college so they are older than 14! We are planning on pausing after each page and having students shift around the room so that they all sit in the same spot to record. We will see how it goes, and edit everything as best as possible to see what you guys think!

I hadn't noticed you assigned me as the "wonderful Britannia" ! That's cute.

This class reading of chapter 2 sounds like an interesting project. I look forward to listening to that.

Hi Phil, can I read chapter XIV for you? (The "wake up" chapters are always my favorite!)

Also, the text called that chapter The Rehearsal of "The Enchanted Cheese," but the MW has "The Enchanged Cheese"
