National Geographic Magazine Vol. 01 No. 2.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/national-geographic-magazine-vol-01-no-2-by-various/

Volunteers outside the USA: Please note the death dates of the authors noted in the Magic Window. Some might be unknown, others might have died less than 70 years ago. Please keep in mind that their work might still protected by copyright in places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955) or Canada (author's death plus 50 years).

Volume 1 Number 1 has already been cataloged!: http://librivox.org/national-geographic-magazine-vol-01-no-1-by-various/
National Geographic Magazine Volume 1 Number 2 published in 1889. Topics of articles are:
Africa, it's Past and Future
Reports on:
Geography of the Land
Geography of the Sea
Geography of the Air
Geography of Life
(Summary by Guero)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is 2012-Dec-31 .
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.archive.org/details/nationalgeograph11889nati

Note: It is not necessary to read the text that accompanies illustrations, unless it adds interesting facts that can be understood without seeing the image.
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: gu - Guero
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Woo hoo! Thanks, Kara. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

With one section already in, I think it's time to move to Readers Wanted...

Could I possibly sign up to DPL this?

Absolutely, Adam. I'll add you to the Magic Window in a few moments. Have you ever used the MW? If not, I'll send you a PM with your user name/password and instructions.

If you decide you want to read any of the sections, I'll be glad to PL them for you.

Thanks! :D

I would like to take on the past and future, the first three chapters.

I had a hard time finding this text, by the way. You should let your readers know that No. 2 follows No.1 in the same volume, Volume 1. That sounds weird written down, but you'll find a better way of saying it. I was looking for a separate publication and kept coming back to Vol 1, No. 1, which really IS the right place; you just have to search within it to find where No. 2 begins.

MJ - Welcome to the project. Those chapters are yours!

Also, thanks for the feedback on the text locations. In the MW I did point out which pages each section starts and ends on. Did you not see those notations? Or are you saying that wasn't clear enough? I'll gladly do what I can to make it more clear.

Thanks.

Thanks, John. Just for your information, the page numbers do not appear at all on the kindle version, which is what I was looking at. Later, I tried downloading the PDF file. It took a very long time to get to page 99, and the position shown was identified as 147 of 432 (?). Anyway, I guess it matters what type of file you are accessing as to whether or not the page numbers are an effective way to find the location.

At any rate, I've got it now. I'll get to work.

I have 2 questions about the text. I'm sorry, but I don't have a page number to reference in the Kindle edition.

In Section 2, the passage I'm referring to is the section on Slave-Trade, the paragraph beginning, "It is impossible to ascertain the number of slaves imported into America." The text I'm looking at has transmission errors and I don't know what the numbers are supposed to be in the following:

"for /1/ per cent, were lost on the passage, one-third more in the "process of seasoning;" so that, out of ]00 shipped from Africa, not more than 50 lived to be effective laborers."

I interpreted this to say "for 15 per cent were lost on the passage, one-third more in the process of seasoning so that, out of 100 shipped from Africa, not more than 50 lived to be effective laborers." Please advise if I need to change this.

In Section 3, under the topic Stanley Expedition, the paragraph beginning, "The great difficulty in these expeditions is to obtain food." Nearly at the end of this paragraph, I see the following:

"Often the natives not only refuse food to the famished travelers, but oppose them with such arms as they have; and theurit is necessary, in self-defence, to fire upon them."

I interpreted this to say "and therefore it is necessary, in self-defense, to fire upon them." Is this correct?

MJ Franck, I located the passages you are referring to in the pdf format. The first one is: "but these figures do not represent the number shipped from Africa, for 12 1/2 per cent, were lost on the passage, one-third more in the "process of seasoning;" so that, out of 100 shipped from Africa, not more than 50 lived to be effective laborers."
The other one is: "Often the natives not only refuse food to the famished travelers, but oppose them with such arms as they have; and then it is necessary, in self-defence, to fire upon them."
Cheers!
