Show Boat, by Edna Ferber (1885 - 1968)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/show-boat-by-edna-ferber/

Volunteers outside the USA: Edna Ferber died in 1968. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 50 years; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
Published in 1926, Show Boat tells of three generations of the Hawks-Ravenal family and the Cotton Blossom Floating Palace Theatre on the Mississippi River, from the Reconstruction Era of the 1880s, to the Gilded Age and Roaring Twenties. The story was made into a Broadway musical in 1927 and into films (both a silent film and a partial "talkie") in 1929.

NOTE: There are issues of race in the story, particularly anti-Black stereotypes and derogatory terms. It is LibriVox's policy to record texts as written. (Summary by TriciaG)

If you cannot complete the recording within this time, please post in the thread to relinquish your claim or to ask the BC for an extension. If your recording is not completed by the deadline, your claim may be reassigned at the BC's discretion.

Claiming sections: Look in the Magic Window below for the list of available sections. Post a reply in this thread asking for the section you would like to record.

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

Prooflistening level: Special: Standard, plus let's try to pronounce place names correctly. (e.g. Cairo, Ill. is pronounced "KAY-roe") :)
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Ready for claims...

Note that these are fairly long chapters. I decided to leave them long rather than splitting them into parts. Please do read over the chapter before claiming, to be sure you're comfortable with the (ahem) regional dialects and stereotypes.

Hi, Tricia, I came upon Show Boat quite by accident, but am interested in recording Section 6, in particular. I'm new in the Librivox world, but I have Bill Jones by my side to guide my recording ( but definitely not my singing!) If I get involved in Showboat, I may find my way into other sections.

Chapter 6: An enjoyable chapter to listen to. It drew me right in. Nice singing, too! 8-)

0:00-1:27 - This part's a little quiet. Please amplify by 4.5 dB.

12:13 - "and churchyards from Cairo to the gulf." - Cairo is pronounced KAY-row (long A), not like the place in Egypt. :)

28:34 - loud lip smack after "Captain Andy liked and trusted them." Should be pretty easy to zoom in and delete.

About 3.5 seconds of silence at the very end; please lengthen 1.5 more, to a total of 5.

Spot PL OK!

Feel free to record more in this project. 8-)

(By the way, side note: I can read your posts fine without special text formatting. There's no real need to redden and bold the message.) ;)

That's my fault, Tricia. When I've been BCing projects and the list of posts get really long, I like to have references to a section ## appear in red+bold so as to avoid missing a post. Mea Culpa. I suggested that Flora do that, and she has taken my advice. If it's an annoyance to you just let her know and I'm sure she'll stop doing that.

Please assign me sections 7, 8 and 9.
I definitely wouldn't make the same type of request for the Emerson project
