Our New Zealand Cousins, by James Inglis (1845 - 1908)

This project is now complete. All chapters can be found on the catalog page:
https://librivox.org/our-new-zealand-cousins-by-james-inglis/

A travelogue of a trip through New Zealand in 1885 with panegyric descriptions of the scenery, elucidations of the progress the country had made since the writer had been there twenty years earlier, enconiums on the differences between New South Wales and New Zealand, and the writer's thoughts on where the two colonies needed to progress in the areas of agriculture, mining, forestry and education. Chapter 20 outlines a brief visit to Hobart on the way home, while the Appendix covers some statistics on the forestry industry in New Zealand (from a report by Professor Thomas Kirk) and concludes with descriptions of the eruption of Tarawera in June 1886 as reported by the Sydney newspapers. (Summary by Beeswaxcandle)

Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I don't think we can read from wikisource. But this should work https://archive.org/details/ournewzealandcou00ingliala/page/vi/mode/2up

From the Recording and Text Policies page of the LibriVox Wiki: "Wikisource is not acceptable unless it has a scan that clearly shows a publication date of 96 years or more, because they restrict use of the texts with a CC license." [emphasis mine]

I proofread this text in 2012 based on the scan held at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Our_New_Zealand_Cousins.djvu, which in turn was a download of https://archive.org/details/ournewzealandcou00ingliala

It is much easier to read from the transcluded Wikisource pages than either the IA or PG—partly because that's what I'm most used to, but also because the presentation is cleaner.

Scans are always harder to use - we will accept wikisource as long as it is identical but otherwise we can't . This one looks and sounds OK.

I'll set this up for you - back in a moment with the MW.

Edit: Okay, all set and ready to go!

You did well with the template. Only thing left to decide is whether you'd like to use chapter or section in the intro/outro. It doesn't matter either way (section is better if you have to split or combine chapters) but you should be consistent.

Oh, and once you're done with the book, you may want to upgrade the summary to something more... exciting? longer? informative? ... so that listeners have a better idea of what they're getting into. 8-)

I have changed the textlink to the scan on archive. It's fine for you to read from wikisource if you prefer, but I'd rather have the DPL proof against the scan (knowing full well that "standard PL" doesn't require reading along with the text). ;-)

Since you're brand new to this whole BCing stuff, here's a link to help you with updating the Magic Window (which is your job now, mostly):
https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Soloists:_How_to_update_the_Magic_Window

First of all, you'll need a new password to get into the Magic Window - click on the "BC Admin" link and follow the instructions. This password will work for all your other BC and DPL projects, and for the uploader as well).

Let me know if you have any questions! We'll stay here for a few more days to see if we can catch us a DPL. But you can start recording and uploading rightaway. Have fun!
Cheers, Ava.

Chapter 2 uploaded first (because I made a mess of Chapter 1 and need to do a lot of interpolations or re-record it).

Chapter 2 is PL OK.

There is a moderate amount of background noise, particularly at the start. Not something that needs to be changed for this recording I don't think, but something to be aware of for future.

So interesting re-reading this after ten years—makes me wish again that I could have seen the Pink and White Terraces before the Tarawera eruption

Got it. Don't forget to update the status to "Ready for PL" in the MW when you post them. I've gone ahead and done that here, so I don't lose track that these are ready when I PL later today.

Replacement Chapter 4: https://librivox.org/uploads/availle/ournzcousins_04_inglis_128kb.mp3

I forgot to take out some extra time at the beginning until the last moment and didn't check that everything else moved back with it. That moment is now about about 22:36 (ish).

Thanks for the reminder about updating the status. I thought of it about 12 hours after I had uploaded and you had kindly already done it for me.

Speedy! This is now PL OK

I just found a neat setting in Audacity that ensures multiple tracks all move when edits are done. Under Edit -> Preferences, Tracks -> Tracks Behaviors, you can enable "Editing a clip can move other clips". Which then makes it possible to paste additional content into an early track (I used to get "there is no room" as an error all the time), and when you delete content, the later tracks move with it.
