The Dinner Club , by H. C. McNeile (1888 - 1937)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-dinner-club-by-sapper/
Herman Cyril McNeile, better known as Sapper, was one of England’s most popular fiction writers during the period between World Wars I and II. He was a soldier, and his early writings mostly concerned war and the way war influenced the lives of his main characters. Because British officers were prohibited from publishing under their own names, he used the pseudonym Sapper. His best known works are ten thrillers featuring Bulldog Drummond.

Sapper also wrote a great many other novels and short stories. The Dinner Club begins with each of six men, the members of the club, telling a gripping story that relates specifically to his particular line of work (the first six chapters). All but one of the chapters that follow feature different characters. Yet to greater and lesser degrees they develop themes introduced in the first half of the book by the members of The Dinner Club.

If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'll set this up in a bit.

You can use "Sapper" as the name in the intros and file name. That's what he's known best by, similar to Mark Twain. :)

EDIT: It's set up. :) Popping it over to Going Solo...

I'll splice "Sapper" into intros of Chapters 1, 2, 3, 6 -- soon to be in MW.

Ch 1, 2, 3 and 6 in MW, with author SAPPER spliced in (over HCM).

I'm liking these. Nothing spectacular, but then nothing disappointing. Good, solid stories so far. Hope you will agree.

:)

Section 1 had McNeile as the author - otherwise it was A-OK. :)

I enjoyed the story!

The rest are PL OK. I'm enjoying these enough to listen to them one after the other. ;)

Posted now to MW Ch 1 fixed, and Ch 4, 5.

I like these too. I've been on a serious WWI listening kick; I'd known of but never known Sapper. Not bad stuff.

No need to listen to Chapter 1-6 in order -- the stories are unrelated, and just give us the character of the men. HOWEVER, there are TWELVE chapters, and I'll bet my bottom 1919 German Mark ( ) that chapters 7 - 12 will be related. But HOW? Edge of seat time.

Section 4:

6:24 - a 2-second silence in the recording, but it seems to pick up right where it left off, so you can just cut it out.
30:27-30:47 - a whistle in the vocals. If you run a notch filter at frequency 1242 and Q of 13, it takes it right out. (It wouldn't hurt anything to run it over the whole file, in case my times are off.)

Thanks for the instructions about fixing chapter 4. I'm always happy to learn.
Chapters 7 and 10 in MW.

(BTW there's no reason to read these in order. So far, they seem disconnected with the first 6 chapters, and with each other.)

Re: Chapter 4:

I removed the 2 seconds of silence, and I tried the notch frequency fix you suggested. Still hear a little bit of the beeping around 30.00, but otherwise it's gone.

So, I'm posting the fixed one -- let me know if I should do more to it.

Chapter 11 in MW.

I've read the remaining chapters, and though three of the earlier characters come in at one point, there really isn't any continuity. A bit disappointing. But anyhow, not the worst thing we've piloted through, you and I, eh?

So you like Sapper, eh? Noted and filed.

Just noticed chapters 1-4, 6 and 11 are titled "dinnerclub_xx_mcneile" -- the others with author sapper. How to rename the former with sapper as the author? Or should I delete these files and replace them with correctly named ones?

Sorry.

Please advise.
