Children of the Tenements, by Jacob Riis (1849 - 1914)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/children-of-the-tenements-by-jacob-a-riis/

This is a collection of vignettes about poverty in New York City in the early 1900s. Jacob Riis was a police reporter and a sociologist. He made human the faces of extreme poverty and did not limit his often-wrenching prose to children. He included old people and animals, and described diverse cultures. These stories evoke both laughter and tears.

Target completion date: 2022-12-01

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Setting this up for you now.

Edit: Done. Do you need to advertise for a DPL?

I didn't realize that I needed to advertise for a dpl.
I just posted for one -- hope I did it correctly. J

Yes, please. It gives all the information in the format potential DPLs would recognize. There’s no hurry… you can wait until there are some sections to PL.

I'll subscribe to this thread. Just let me know each time you post a new section by posting its number and I will be automatically informed.

Looking forward to this, though I suspect these will be mostly sad stories.

Do you know how to edit out the tilde from your first post? I suspect that Lynnet will remove your advert for a DPL.

If you go to your first post in this thread, you'll find an edit button to the upper right. It allows you to modify your post. Once there, you can just delete that tilde. If you're uncomfortable doing that, don't worry.
