London Labour and the London Poor - Volume 4, by Henry Mayhew (1812 - 1887)
Subtitled A Cyclopaedia of the condition and earnings of those that will work, those that cannot work, and those that will not work.

This volume: those that will not work, comprising prostitutes, swindlers, thieves, beggars.

Henry Mayhew was a social researcher and journalist who compiled a four-volume work in minute detail on the lives of the poor in London, of which this is the fourth volume, published in 1862, and co-written with Bracebridge Hemyng, John Binny and Andrew Halliday.

Notes:
1. Arithmetical errors have been left unchanged.
2. The Appendix consists of a number of maps and tables of statistics, comparing the counties of England and Wales. The 'casual listener' may wish to skip these.

(Summary by Peter Yearsley and Gillian Hendrie)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'm going for it!

This volume seems to be quite a bit longer than the previous ones so it may well be over 100 sections. I did write "120 sections" in the project generator page, but it seems to have only allowed for sections numbered up to 99.

I'll set it up for you - it is possible to do 255 sections, any more and Archive can't cope- I'll look into it. The essential thing is that file numbers you upload had 3 digits - 001 not 01
I've given you a MW and put 000- in the titles field to remind you that needs 3 as well
I'm just about starting to listen to volume 2 :D

Thanks a lot, Anne!

I'll just finish up Napoleon and then get on it.

Since there are no chapter numbers, it's probably easier to call the first section "Section 1" straight away (rather than "Section 0") even though it's an 'advertisement'. Is that okay? It might avoid confusion.

that sounds good - just do what you want (with 3 digits :D ) in the title fields I'll change the number of lines necessary then. And just say section not chapter

Are you chasing a DPL or is the team continuing ?

Not necessarily continuing, although that would be nice. I thought I'd wait until I had a couple of sections recorded and in the MW before asking for a DPL.

Would you like me to DPL, Gill?

Are you reading from the PDF? Are you going to omit the Appendix?

... and watch out for "The Society for the Suppression of Vice", which I saw mentioned in the index at the front. I wonder what happened to the society? I don't think we still have it.

There are a couple of nice-looking books mentioned in the advertisement on the page before the preface, too!

Congratulations on taking this on.

That would be great, Peter! Thanks.
I was about to message you - wasn't sure how busy you were at the moment.

Couldn't let the final volume go undone! I don't think I'll be getting through this too quickly, but we'll see.

I slightly changed the introduction part of Section 2 so please wait for the new upload. Actually, I'm asking Anne a question about recognising the other contributors in the intro, so hold off for now.

I found the pdf version after I had posted the link to the scanned work, so I'm using the original but checking any queries against the pdf.

Anne, can I change the introduction to say "by Henry Mayhew and other contributors" since there are large sections written by other people?

Anne,
The LibriVox message at the start: "by Henry Mayhew (dates)" and then add in "and other contributors".

sorry - I edited not replied so here goes again\

So before every file or just file 1 ?
I'd have no objection before fil1 (001 :D ) but it doesn't seem really necessary every time - but then I haven't read the book, so far I've only listened to book 1.
If you think it is necessary go ahead. If the et als wrote a whole section perhaps you could just say "by al1" or "by al1 and al2"
