Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert (1821 - 1880), translated by Eleanor Marx-Aveling (1855 - 1898)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/madame-bovary-ver2-by-gustave-flaubert/
Written over a century and a half ago, Madame Bovary is still an extraordinarily fresh, exciting and shockingly frank novel, at once an acute psychological study of a woman drawn into adultery through circumstances we can partly understand, and a sharply-observed comedy that offers a fascinating glimpse of the social and cultural divisions running through French provincial society in the mid nineteenth century. This translation is by Eleanor Marx-Aveling, a prominent social activist and literary translator. She was the youngest daughter of Karl Marx. (Summary by Peter Dann)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I am aware there is already another (collaborative) recording of this work in the Librivox catalogue in English translation.

Sunrise2020 has kindly agreed to act as DPL for this project.

MW coming up.

edit: Let me know if any changes are needed. It will be nice to have a solo English recording of this book. Hope the partying in Melbourne doesn't interfere with your recording.

Thanks Dave. My goodness, we must be famous! Fortunately I don't need my hair tinted or my nails done, and I've never been a great midnight carouser, so all relatively quiet here. Most likely interference will be from the cawing of all our ravens. So anyway, now we'll find out how the rest of the (fortunate, vaccinated part of the) world lives with this thing.

Thank you! I must say this text is just a delight to read. Flaubert's prose is just dripping with wit. From what I recall (from a long time ago now) it gets a bit grim later on, but there's certainly a lot of fun early.

I have uploaded section 08: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/madamebovary_08_flaubert_128kb.mp3 (23:27)

To those of us who happen to have read (or listened to) Carlyle recently, this encounter of Emma with her 'much betters' takes on added poignancy, it seems to me. If Robespierre had survived, would there ever have been another Marquis or Viscount to arouse Emma's envy in France?

It was indeed good to have Carlyle's book on recall. I'm tempted to read ahead but I shall wait for the recording of the next chapters!
