Nature, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1770 - 1850)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/nature-by-henry-wadsworth-longfellow/
LibriVox volunteers bring you 25 recordings of Nature, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
This was the Weekly Poetry project for June 20th, 2021.
------
This nostalgic poem says a lot in a few words -- masterfully comparing a mother putting her child to bed for the night, with an elderly life approaching its natural end. (Summary by Michele Fry)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
Nature by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
As a fond mother, when the day is o’er.
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wished to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Nice one! Somehow reminds a little of another recent weekly, ‘Night and Death’
