No More Parades, by Ford Madox Ford (1873 - 1939)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/no-more-parades-by-ford-madox-ford/
When No More Parades was first published in 1925, a critic in The Observer wrote of the first 100 pages that they "easily surpass in truth, brilliance and subtlety everything else that has yet been written in England about the physical circumstances and moral atmosphere of the war". The second novel in the Parade's End tetralogy, No More Parades places army captain (and former civil servant and statistician) Christopher Tietjens, his beautiful but cruel wife Sylvia, and Tietjens' jealous and tempestuous godfather and commanding officer General Campion in, and just behind, the lines at Rouen, France in 1917, where Christopher finds himself subject not only to physical, but also to mental and moral torments that speak volumes about the society of which he is a part, and which will perhaps surprise many a modern reader/listener. (Summary by Peter Dann)

If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Sunrise2020 has kindly agreed to act as DPL for this project.

I hope to begin recording for this project as soon as I have completed Some Do Not..., which I am currently working on in collaboration with Sunrise2020.

We have problems with PG Australia texts for LV because they do not claim to be any particular edition - because it doesn't matter when copyright is based on author's death date, not date published. Some of the later editions do have more information. It may be available somewhere else.

I've bookmarked the project and ready for each new recording :D . This time round, I know not to get confused by FMF's leaps. Let's see how long I can keep the story straight without re-listening to sections. :hmm:

Well, good luck with that! I get the benefit of reading the material off the page, and for me it's now a second read through in as many months, and that definitely makes it easier for me.

Well that's good going on your part, given that it's clearly part of FMF's plan to immerse you in the almost overwhelming sense of confusion and many-things-happening-at-once that Tietjens has to deal with! Maybe FMF will have to try harder... :D

I've now uploaded section 03: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/nomoreparades_03_ford_128kb.mp3 (42:45)

Interestingly, I'm finding that, as a reader, I have a certainly amount of flexibility open to me in how I break up a text for reading. Confronted with a longish chapter (for example, one that might take 70 minutes to read as a single chapter) there are typically options like breaking it into two or breaking it into three sections for reading. With this novel, I have planned my breaks so that sections are rather long. This makes them somewhat harder to read in one chunk (I find it harder to maintain my concentration over longer sections) but I think potentially makes the text easier to comprehend for the listener, who is not having to contend with divisions of the content that were not intended by the original author.

I realised after I uploading my first version of section 03 that it contained an error, and have re-recorded between about 29:30 and 30:45 and have uploaded again.
Section 03 https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/nomoreparades_03_ford_128kb.mp3 is now about 4 seconds longer, at 42:49.

Hopefully this shouldn't affect you, Susanne, unless you downloaded the slightly shorter version before I posted this.

I PL‘ed the first version of section 3 and must admit that i didn’t notice any mistakes :hmm:
Sylvia waiting at the gate certainly makes for a suspenseful ending of that chapter! As a listener I don’t have the advantage or disadvantage of seeing paragraphs or chapters. I prefer when a section ends when there is a halt or one of FBF‘s favorite about-turns. Otherwise the listener might be even more confused.
I was puzzled by the mother from Toronto waiting for her son...

Well, she's a long way from home, that's for sure, and that might be throwing you (as in "why on earth is she HERE?"). But her circumstance is pretty dire, according to her son's story. He's a volunteer from Canada (NOT a conscript), and two of his brothers have already been killed in the fighting. As for himself, he left Canada in circumstances where he did not get a chance to say goodbye to his mother. He is now about to go up to the front lines for the first time, where he may very well be killed. His mother has come all this way in the hopes of laying eyes on him, and before he goes up to the front line, tonight, he wants to spend two hours in her company. That, at any rate, is the Canadian's story - though Tietjens suspects it may all be a fiction.
The whole incident marks quite a contrast with Tietjens' own situation. He, too, has two brothers who have died, but there's no-one waiting at the camp gate for him for such simple, sentimental reasons. Au contraire!

I have now uploaded section 04: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/nomoreparades_04_ford_128kb.mp3 (40:07)
