Mob Rule In New Orleans by Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862 - 1931).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/mob-rule-in-new-orleans-by-ida-b-wells-barnett/
Born into slavery in Mississippi in 1862, Ida B. Wells-Barnett was an African-American journalist, newspaper editor, suffragist, sociologist, feminist, leader in the Civil Rights Movement, and one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. Gathering her information from two New Orleans newspapers, Mrs. Wells-Barnett recounts in graphic detail the events of one particularly violent week in early 20th century New Orleans during which a mob "roamed the streets day and night, searching for colored men and women, whom they beat, shot and killed at will." A worse massacre was avoided, as stated by the author, because of "the determined stand for law and order taken by these great [newspapers] and the courageous action taken by the best citizens of New Orleans, who rallied to the support of the civic authorities." This account serves as chilling documentation of the mindless savagery of an anger- and hate-driven mob. ( Holly Jenson)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thanks, Anne!

Yes, not exactly a cheerful subject, but I was looking for something about New Orleans because that's where I'm originally from, and this seemed interesting, although sad and scary.

Wait. I don't want to cause confusion, so I should say, Sections 0 and 1 ready for PL.

I will be calling the "chapters" sections in the reading, since this is a pamphlet and not a book. If I should be doing it another way, please let me know.

0 PL OK.
1
Just say section 1 at the opening (i.e. delete "Part 1"). Later when you say the section name it's ok to say "Part 1" though I would say it after the section name. Sections don't have parts but this "chapter" does. The file ending also should just be "end of section 1." I hope this is clear and makes sense.
