The Freaks: An Idyll of Suburbia, by Arthur Wing Pinero (1855 - 1934)
When Mrs. Herrick's brother Charlie dies, he leaves his money in trust for members of the circus he used to own under the name of "Segantini's World Renowned Mammoth International Hippodrome and Museum of Living Marvels". When five of the Extraordinary Mortals of the circus show up to visit with the Ordinary Mortals at Mrs. Herrick's country house, there is a clash of cultures....
(Summary by ToddHW)
This project is complete. Audio files can be found in our Librivox catalog page at https://librivox.org/the-freaks-an-idyll-of-suburbia-by-arthur-wing-pinero/

Here we go again - another Pinero. This is a strange one - farcical setup but more romantic than funny. You are left realizing that freak in appearance or not, we are all human. Or maybe thinking that those that appear as freaks are more human than those that appear to be human.

Gender neutral, of course. And due to the wonders of this being audio, your height, weight, physical condition, and appearance do not matter in your selection of roles.

Sonia will be the Grand Lady of the House, and will take some time from drinking tea and discussing the servant situation to be our DPL. Read well, or she may start discussing you....

yay a new Pinero :9: promising title too. (though it uncomfortably reminds me of the old movie of the same name...the ending gave me the creeps.) This one is much funnier I predict.

I'll put in my bid for DPL and Lady Ball-Jennings please :)

Thank you.

For the stage directions, you need to read everything that is not read by the actors. So each time you see "closes door" or "drinks wine" or "exit left", you would need to read. Often it's written in italics or between brackets, but not always, so finding all the directions can be tricky business.

There is a special rule that concerns reading the characters' names. It's quite easy to remember:

1) if the stage direction appears at the beginning of the speech, you include the character's name.
Example:
John (sitting down on the couch): "I feel a headache coming on."
you would read everything I underlined now, including the name.

2) if the stage direction is in the middle or at the end of the speech, you do not repeat the name, because it's already clear who is speaking.
Example:
John: "I feel a headache coming on." (sits down on the couch) "I think I need a rest." (dozes off)
both times, no name included, only the underlined parts would be read.

Please leave at least 4-5 seconds between each chunk. So each time the narration is interrupted by a character speech, you leave ample space. It makes copy/pasting easier for our editor (me).

Also - record a voice credit for yourself: "Stage directions, read by XXXX"

Thanks, Todd
