Ion, by Thomas Noon Talfourd (1784 - 1854)
This drama, set in Ancient Greece, was written by a Victorian lawyer who was a close friend of Charles Dickens. When collected into book format, “The Pickwick Papers” was dedicated to him. As a Member of Parliament, Sir Thomas Noon Talfourd introduced legislation protecting the copyrights of authors. This play was originally printed only to be read as poetry. However, it attracted the attention of William Macready, who mounted a successful production of it at Covent Garden in 1836. The drama became a much bigger hit a few years later, though, when it was revived with actress Ellen Terry taking over the part of the tragic hero, Ion. Charlotte Cushman and other leading ladies of the day took advantage of the craze for “breeches roles” and donned togas to play this doomed young Grecian noble.

Looking for an MC

ADKReader will be our DPL
Wilted Scribe will be reading Adrastus
Kalamareader will be reading Agenor
I will be reading the part of Ion

As gender neutral casting is fairly common these days on Librivox, I suppose no explanation is necessary for my choice to read this role – However, in this case, I do have special reason. As I stated in the summary, this play was originally staged at London’s Covent Garden. Famed actor William Charles Macready took the lead role. At this time, there was a great craze for “breeches role” in which actresses played male characters. “Ion” was revived two years later by the same company with Ellen Tree playing the lead. Anna Cora Mowatt, the actress/playwright I am studying, had some success in the U.S. playing Ion. I want to see if our production will recreate the sort of “dreamy” and “romantic” feeling the Victorians reported this play had with a woman’s voice speaking the lines of the main role. Therefore, friends, thank you not only for taking part in this play, but also for adding your efforts to my little research project!

Well, some good roles here, but I think I'll throw my hat in the ring for the stage directions, if I may.
