Act 2 Note:
0:17- please add "The Colonel will be here directly, ma'am." (page 224)
Ack! Didn't notice that one at all

Let's try that again:

I just love the way you characterized him! Wonderful job!

Acts 2 and 3 are PL-OK!

I do have one line for you to add that I found missing in Act 1.

Act 1 Note:
1:52- please insert "Ah! Tom, my boy, I'm delighted to see you; how uncommonly jolly you're looking, to be sure!" (pg 210)

Mr. Effingham, member of a romantic family, awaits PL in the MW. Make sure you have somewhere comfortable to sit when you listen, because although there are not many lines, they are spoken v e r y s l o w l y....

Hi!
This is my Act 1 Matilda reading. I think it is too loud, but I recorded it a bunch so I was wondering if there is a way to fix it after?

Any other tips for my first big role are appreciated :),

Hi Helena!

Just had a listen. Lovely job with Matilda! Her accent is great and all the lines are there

However, there are a couple of things that need to be addressed to get your file in tip-top shape.

You are correct, the volume is a little loud and falls outside the acceptable range. Best way to solve the volume issue is to turn your mic down before you record. If you record too loud you can get clipping and buzzing which can't be fixed afterward. If there isn't any clipping you can use the "Amplify" effect (I'm assuming you're using Audacity) and de-amplify by a few dB's to get to the target level. There are a couple of places in your audio that buzz and I'll ask you to re-record those below.

I am also hearing some humming in the background of all your lines which you can easily take care of with noise reduction. If you need help with this, let me know.

Now, with that said here is what I'll ask you to do:

1. De-amplify entire file by about -5.5dB. This should get it pretty close and Todd can do any final adjustments on the volume when he edits.
2. Run noise reduction to get rid of the hum/background noise.
3. Re-record the following lines that have areas that sound distorted because of the volume it was recorded at (make sure to turn your mic down):

4:18- "Ye niver mean to sit there and tell me ye're the young gintleman of high family, unblemished morals, and considerable command of ready money?" (pg 209)

6:10- "Deed, and I don't. Why, if it isn't my old schoolfellow, Carrie Effingham! It's Carrie, as I'm a living sinner!" (pg 212)

8:03- "Oh! but ye'll get thumping damages when ye do find him." (pg 214)

Hi!

I de-amplifyed the whole recording like you said. I used noise reduction in the first copy, but only between lines. This one I added it throughout. I also reread the 3 lines and they passed through the checker app.

3 lines redone

Thank you for the help- Helena

Please use the same file name - on any project at Librivox, not just dramatic works - when you update them. A link is set up in the MW when you first send in a file, and if you reuse the same name after fixes, your new file will just replace the old file so that the link is still valid. (Your previous file is saved and can be retrieved by folks smarter than me if necessary.)

Thanks, Todd

Thank you! Your Act 1 file sounds fine now! And the 3 lines you recorded also are fine.

However, you will need to add the 3 lines you re-recorded into the Act 1 file at the appropriate times I mentioned in the PL Notes.. It should be as simple as having both files open, copying and pasting the redone line into the original file and making sure the old one is cut out. I hope that makes sense. Then make sure to keep the file name the same as Todd mentioned. Please feel free to ask any questions!
