Watson Story 4 pl note:

@9min approx, wrong word not “provided” but “provoked”
In the section with “coroner, witness” etc, there will be more repeats required but these can easily enough be cut and pasted.

Also please note that some more space between paragraphs where the scene changes will be needed.

This story is still waiting on Larry’s corrections for Mr John Turner so isn’t quite ready to edit yet.

Watson Story 6 PL notes:

@9:56 first half of sentence is missing; “We had driven several miles”

@16:01 editing error, half of sentence missing “while the other led us in.”

I think I’m all caught up now! I don’t attempt to remember all the files, readers or notes - it’s all recorded in the Magic Window. If you learn to use it, it will make your life a lot easier and your job as the BC much smoother!

Thanks Beth!

I'll work through these in order, as and when poss!

Just a note on Jabez Wilson from Section 2. About 1:45 there is a little editing error in the
original file that I simply cannot fix. 'I should not wish...' jumps in a little fast. I'm using it as is -
just thought I would mention it. (Mainly so I don't get the blame!)

Hello Beth,

I'm pretty sure that I have these sorted, and ready for PL.

https://librivox.org/uploads/kathrinee/sherlockholmes_02__doyle_128kb.mp3

49:28 I get a 'passed with warnings' on this one - but I can't figure out why. Help?

https://librivox.org/uploads/kathrinee/sherlockholmes_03__doyle_128kb.mp3

35:36 Same here. Sounds fine to me - what am I doing wrong?

If I have missed anything, let me know.

As I mentioned in the PM, Sections four through six are ' almost' totally edited - just waiting

on Inspector Bradstreet and Sherlock.

Peter - I did this for my own benefit (and entetainment!) I shall be able to plop your lines into place as and when you have time to record them - no rush!

Andrew :)

Exciting times! I should have time to PL at least one of these today. I’ll lisyen for any short volume spikes, that sometimes upsets the Checker.

My next post may be a couple of weeks, as I'm sending my main computer in for an upgrade (and to sort out a hum that it's started to make). I have a backup computer, but I'm not certain what it's capable of.

OK, I think I've figured out what the problem is, though the solution is not so obvious. In the background of the narrator files (yours) there is a lot of noise - not sure if it is computer wires humming or a fan/heater or rain, or something else. It's very noticeable in both of these files. Sorry I didn't notice it on the first PL through, but it's really obvious next to the other files.

In future, the easiest way would be to find out what is causing the noise and get rid of it, if possible. Otherwise, run two or three passes of noise cleaning over the narrator files before editing together. (Do you have a noise cleaning routine already?)

For the already edited together files, Im not sure how to handle it - you don't want to run heavy noise cleaning over the whole file because it will damage the other voices and make everything sound "tinny". It may be possible to get the noise cleaning settings from the final 5 seconds of silence and just selectively noise clean the narration sections of each file? Otherwise I'm afraid the only way I can think of would be to noise clean the original narration files and re-do the editing back into those files, which would be a lot of work.

I haven't PLed these files, as I think a lot of editing is going to be required and I'd need to do a new PL after that anyway.

Just one other note, are there two underscores after the number of the file? If so, please change it to just one next time to allow the uploader to sort the files in order properly. It's very fussy and a single character wrong will put it off.

Thanks Beth!

This is a total pain, as the entire reason that I bought my laptop was because my pc is too 'noisy' to
record on!

Ah well - life is shit and then you die!

I'll have a go at noise reducing my base files (again!) and see if that helps. I have no objections
to re-editing the files - I would prefer to get them right, if poss!

Hello Beth,

I've just double-checked my Dr. Watson files.

Section 2 passed at 87.6 dB.

Section 3 passed at 89.4 dB.

I'm not entirely sure how I changed this by editing in all the other roles - I checked each beforehand - but
I don't want to spend a couple of days re-editing the files until I know that I am not wasting my time.
(Perhaps a second opinion would be helpful?)

Also, I'm not sure what you mean about the naming. The files that I uploaded were called

sherlockholmes_02 _doyle_128kb

sherlockholmes_03 _doyle_128kb

Anything that happened to them after uploading is beyond my control.

I hope we can sort this - I've put in too much to just let it go. All suggestions and
advice appreciated - I'm here to help!

I don’t mean the overall volume, it’s just the background noise that’s the problem. (The sound in the spaces in between where you are speaking.)

Have a read in the Wiki linked at the top of the page about noise reduction. There’s a link from the 1 minute test page because it’s quite a common problem.

It looks in the filenames like there’s a space after the number? That needs to come out next time, that’s all.

Okay,

What I usually do is run noise reduction, then put it through replay gain.

I'll try running noise reduction on these files again - even though they have already been through it once already.

Maybe that will make a difference!

Okay, are these any better?

https://librivox.org/uploads/kathrinee/sherlockholmes_drwatson_02_128kb.mp3

https://librivox.org/uploads/kathrinee/sherlockholmes_drwatson_03_128kb.mp3

Just to be clear, these files have now been through noise reduction, replaygain, noise reduction again, and replaygain again.

(Without replaygain they are just too quiet.)

If they are okay, I'll start the edits again from here, and delete the ones I've already done.

Here's a re-recording of part of victor hatherley: “Half dazed, I went into the station and asked about the morning train. There would be one to Reading in less than an hour. The same porter was on duty, I found, as had been there when I arrived. I inquired of him whether he had ever heard of Colonel Lysander Stark. The name was strange to him. Had he observed a carriage the night before waiting for me? No, he had not. Was there a police-station anywhere near? There was one about three miles off.

Can I have the role of Toller in Section 12?
If so, here it is: https://librivox.org/uploads/kathrinee/sherlockholmes_toller_12_128kb.mp3
If not, please ignore.

Best,
Adrian

Thanks Adrian! You’re super efficient! Love to have you read Toller, I’ll put it in the MW now and PL it tomorrow.

Edit: Toller is PL OK! Very nice character acting for such a short role! :9:
