Crossings: A Fairy Play by Walter De la Mare (1873 - 1956).

Under the terms of a will, the Wildersham children have to relocate from the family house in the city to "Crossings" in the country, and to spend the first fortnight alone fending for themselves in the house. The children encounter interesting country neighbors, including ghosts and fairies. Or are they dreaming?

Walter De La Mare was a poet, and we have a number of his poems available at Librivox. This is his only play: "Crossings was produced for the first time in 1919, at the Wick School, Hove, to celebrate the coming of Peace. With the exception of one grown-up, Mr. Sebastian Sprott, its characters were taken by boys aged fourteen, or under."
( ToddHW and Author)
This project is now complete. Audio files may be found in the Librivox catalog at https://librivox.org/crossings-a-fairy-play-by-walter-de-la-mare/

  • Volunteers outside the USA: Walter De La Mare died in 1956. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955), UNLESS the rule of shorter term applies.

    Gender neutral casting, of course.

DO NOT SING. It is too hard to match parts, and after all, Walter was a poet so just reading his words sounds good enough.

NOTE: Some of the character lines in the play are called out in the stage directions instead of being nicely labeled at the beginning of the actual character lines. So extra care will be needed when reading to ensure you don't miss things.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.3298/page/n5
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Wow, the stage directions for this are formidable!
So, I'd better pass since I'm do the Pinero piece.
(I have the firs act formatted)
I'd love to have Mr. Wilbersham, though, and he's just in two acts.

I know you don't have a DPL yet, but I know if I don't upload my recordings as I go, I will forget to do so. So here's my act 1.

Recording time: 1:41 mins.

Very nice reading. However, you missed two lines at 1:30, one each on pages 15 (unnumbered) and 16.

Sorry about that. I’ll record them. Do you want them in their respective spots or at the end?

Thanks,
Campbell
