A Little Bit of Fluff by Walter W. Ellis (1874 - 1956).

According to the website www.stagebeauty.net, this is the 5th longest running play ever, with over 1200 original performances. Like Charley's Aunt (number 2 on the list and released by Librivox earlier in 2018), this also is a farce. An insurance investigator, a possible fraudulent injury claim, a lost necklace, an aged aunt with a more than passing resemblance to someone else, and of course, that Little Piece of Fluff - all conspire to cause great confusion.

  • Volunteers outside the USA: Walter Ellis died in 1964. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955), UNLESS the rule of shorter term applies.

Let’s finish off 2018 with A Little Piece of Fluff.
    Gender neutral casting as always.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/52851
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I think I'll DPL for you. I read this play through when it was first suggested, and enjoyed it, but I shouldn't pick up any more recording at the moment.

Can I be Ursula? Also, I haven't recorded a play before, so do I just pause when another character is supposed to be speaking?

Welcome, and yes you can be Ursula.

A few things about dramas. First off, and this applies to all Librivox projects, the instructions are all described in the first posting. Such things as the reference text, where to upload, the file names to use (with one file for each act in dramas). For dramas you won't have to read any introduction or closing text - that is handled by the narrator/reader of the stage directions. But do include in your recordings a voice credit with the character name as given in the MW so I can assemble the cast list at the beginning of the play.

Second, when you record, leave good size gaps - several seconds at least - between each line. Where another character would speak, or where a stage direction might interrupt a line. I need to cut your files apart to cut and paste each line into its place in the master files, and I need to be able to easily see where the line breaks are.

Edit your part to be correct and represent your best attempt - the wonder of this Librivox process is that no one knows about all the tries that get trashed and never heard in the final releases. Avoid clipping and, if necessary, do any (very little I hope) noise cleaning. Our DPL - dedicated proof listener will provide feedback and encouragement on your submittals.

Finally, have fun with the part. You don't get to communicate with your appearance and gestures, so everything has to be communicated in the voice. Look at what other characters are saying near your lines and interact with them - if you wish, download the file for other characters so you can hear what they sound like in your conversations with them. But give me just your voice in the files you submit.

Enjoy, and pepper us with questions. We're here to help!

Thanks, Todd

I was looking up this play to find more information about Ursula, and I couldn't find much except that she is Mr. Tully's maid. Any suggestions on where I can search?
