The Gondoliers by W. S. Gilbert (1836 - 1911).

In typical Gilbert and Sullivan "Topsy Turvy" style, the King of Barataria has gone missing! He was stolen as a baby and raised in secrecy as one of two gondoliers (nobody knows which) and his wife would like very much to know where he is! The Grand Inquisitor appears in Venice to take both Gondoliers to a life of luxury and rulership - but is dismayed to discover that both are reluctant to leave their wives behind. Somehow two husbands have managed to acquire three wives, and nobody is happy at the idea of marrying a vulgar fraction!

This is a spoken "poetic" version of the libretto written by W. S. Gilbert, where a full cast of voices brings the sparkling wit of Gilbert to the fore, and will enhance understanding and appreciation of this comic light opera. (Summary by Beth Thomas)
  • This will be a poetic read version of the musical. NO SINGING please, it's too difficult to coordinate. Gender matched casting claims please, as most of the humour in this play is about husbands and wives.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/808/808-h/808-h.htm#link2H_4_0001
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Until we get a MW, Cast List:

Marco - a Gondolier who may be the King of Barataria
Guiseppe - a Gondolier who may be the King of Barataria
Gianetta (the wife of Marco)
Tessa (the wife of Guiseppe)
The Grand Inquisitor - (Claimed by alanmapstone)
The Duke of Plaza-Toro (a comedic character and father-in-law to the King of Barataria)
The Duchess of Plaza-Toro (a comedic character and mother-in-law to the King of Barataria) (Claimed by Foon)
Cassilda - their daughter who was wed in babyhood to the King of Barataria but secretly in love with Luiz (Claimed by Elizabby)
Luiz - their only remaining servant
Inez - the nurse who stole the infant King of Barataria and the only one who knows who he really is. (This is a very small part, as Inez only appears right at the end for the "big reveal". This role could easily be doubled with the Narrator, if desired.)
Narrator - easy job, not much narration here apart from the LV disclaimer and intro. Could be doubled with Inez or any chorus role if desired.

Female Chorus roles all involves lines as well as songs:
Fiametta
Vittoria
Giulia

Male chorus has been condensed into two roles:
Francesco/Giorgio
Antonio/Annibale

There's an amusing typo in the text:
If you are reading stage directions, please include for each file:At the beginning: Act [#] of W. S. Gilbert , by The Gondoliers .

I'm just getting back into doing Librivox readings after a few years away. May I take the Narrator?

I'll get you an MW - back soon. Done. I changed the genre to a play - I'm leaving the file formats to you as only the final one needs to conform to archive

Thanks Tom and Leanne! Both claims will be put into the MW later today!

Tom, as the Narrator you need to read the LV disclaimer, your own voice credit and the scene opening. Then any "action" directions such as "lifting blindfold". If you aren't sure, please include it as it is always easier to cut than to add!

MW is filled in and we are ready to roll!

Anne, you've never done any recording that I've heard - but if you ever wanted to, Inez is a nice little part that would probably suit your voice?

I used to record, but since I had Bell's Palsy I slur when I'm tired, so I make covers instead.
My older sister was in the Youth Operatic society and they performed 2 G&S per year, and I used to be a child usher so I know most of the songs off by heart.

There's not much Italian - it's basically all in the first scene for establishing the setting, then they forget about it! Act 2 takes place in "Barataria" so there's no Italian there at all!

Thanks Tomas and TJ, your claims will appear in the MW soon!
