Adelgitha; or, The Fruits of a Single Error by Matthew Lewis (1775 - 1818).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/adelgitha-or-the-fruits-of-a-single-error-by-matthew-lewis/
The second original tragedy written by Gothic writer Matthew Lewis, Adelgitha; or, The Fruits of a Single Error is a markedly more serious affair than his melodramatic output, dealing as it does with a fallen woman who is mercilessly blackmailed by a ruthless tyrant when she spurns his advances. Set in Otranto during the High Middle Ages, and featuring fictionalized depictions of historical rulers Robert Guiscard (of the Normans) and Michael Ducas (of Byzantium), Adelgitha is an archetypal Gothic drama that, while not especially refined or meritorious in terms of quality, still manages to thrill in that deliciously overwrought way that Lewis knew how to sell. Sit down with it during a stormy night, turn off the lights, and prepare yourself for a few hours of treachery, murder, madness and despair! ( Tomas Peter)
All roles are gender neutral. Please include the character description in your voice credit.

An optional pronunciation guide can be heard here.

  1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/adelgithaorfruit00lewi
  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thank you, Todd, for suggesting this Matthew Lewis play to me last month. :) We did The Castle Spectre last year at about this time, and it proved popular, so I hope this new Lewis offering will generate the same interest. It's not really funny or spooky in the same way as Spectre was, but because this is a Gothic work, I'm not averse to people overacting and making this an aural spectacle. I'd love the person who claims Adelgitha to give her their own feminist spin, as well, since I realize the sexual politics of this one are rather outmoded (to say the least).

Please hold off on claiming until the MW is up and ready. The roles are gender neutral, so women are welcome to play men, and vice-versa. Let's not treat this as a dour affair. Camp it up if you want, don't hold back if you can, and (most importantly) have some fun! :D

Noted, Leanne. Since you'll probably be asleep when the MW is done, I'll let you sneak in this claim. ;) Happy to have you involved!

I have just finished MCing one stage play, so I think I can take on another one. :) I'll be back with a MW soon. Sorry I didn't do it last night, but I was so tired, I probably wouldn't have done a good job of it

Have you seen the list of plays at the end of the book ? I wish someone scanned and uploaded the whole collection. We would be occupied for the next 20 years :9:

yes indeed. It seems the ladies are more eager to grab roles than the males though.

Well, I move us over to the drama forum so we get more exposure.
