I have always wanted to play Claudius, I guess this is as close as I will get!

Maybe we should do another audiobook production of Hamlet?

Thanks Alan. The file is PL OK and quite well read. I'm glad you got the chance to read Claudius, even if it's in a limited capacity.

No rush, Todd. Act I is a beast. I started recording my lines for it the other day and didn't even get a quarter of the way through.

Well, after reading scene 1, Devorah thinks Stein is a pretty upstanding guy, but Goldie disagrees:
Goldie. (Sits R. of table) Oh, I had to come to tell you — to beg you — please, Mr. Webster, don't
go on with it.

Rollo. Don't go on with it?

Goldie. He's going to do it — he said so, on the
way down in the elevator.

Rollo. But I'm glad he is — I expected him to.

Goldie. But you don't know him as I do — it
isn't because he thinks it will be good.

Rollo. Of course not.

Goldie. It is just — just to get your money. He
thinks, if it does succeed, it will be because it is so
bad.

Rollo. Never mind what he thinks — I wouldn't
even accuse him of such a thing.

Goldie. But do you realize what he is? He's
not a good manager at all, Mr. Webster.

Rollo. Of course not. No good manager would
have anything to do with me.

Goldie. And I am nothing at all, Mr. Webster.
I don't suppose there is a worse actress in the world.
Incidentally, when I saw that there's a song for me, I tried to find a copy of it, and had very good success: Blushing June Roses. Oddly, although it says it was published in 1920, it also says "Item Unavailable Due to Copyright Restrictions." But it also let me download the full PDF. :hmm: Sooo... Whatever that's about.

Here is the rather pretentious Mrs Park-Gales! The "Queen" role is included in the 2nd act file.

Goldie's lines are all recorded. Still need to edit. After reading through the play, I decided to play her as a sweetly brainless New York beauty. Something between Betty Boop and Fran Drescher. These two interactions seemed to me to sum her up pretty well:

Horatio. Can't you now? What do you like
to do?

Goldie. Oh, I don't know, really — I never had
time to do anything I like — I love children and
flowers and — my sweet-grass sewing basket — I love
to sew — and — and put initials on things!
Horatio. Why? You've played Ophelia before,
haven't you?

Goldie. No, Mr. Webster, never.

Horatio. Oh! What have you played?

Goldie. Why, nothing very much, Mr. Webster.
I've been mostly — in musical shows.

Horatio. Oh, you sing.

Goldie. No, I don't.

Horatio. Don't you have to sing to be in musical shows?

Goldie. No. You — you don't.

Horatio. Oh — well, what are the qualifications
necessary?

Goldie. Why, different things. Mr. Webster.

Horatio. What in your case?

Goldie. Why, I think it was my ankles — mostly.

Goldie, Act 1 is 18:36

I gave you two versions of the singing: one with and one without piano accompaniment. Since the stage directions make it clear that she is playing while she sings, I thought that would be a nice touch, but it's up to you whether or not you'd like to have it. The score I used is the one published in 1920 that I linked to a few posts up. Incidentally, I did try to find a score for Lydia's song, but so far haven't had any success.

Thanks Beth! An excellent performance, as always. :-)

Act II is PL OK, but I found one missing line in Act I:

1:39 (p. 39) - “Mr. Lucas has a beautiful voice.”

That sounds wonderful, especially since I'm kinda playing Rollo as a well-meaning, overenthusiastic imbecile. :-)

I can't wait to hear your interpretation of this character. I'll be in and out all day, but will try to find time to listen to your file before I go.

And act 3. I gave you a few sobs, if you'd like them, for this:
Rollo. I don't — I don't. Why, Goldie, I realize
now that all the time I was striding through Ham-
let, I was really only stumbling along my way to
you. (She sobs softly. He straightens up) I'll ask
you to marry me again when we both feel more
like it.
Or you can just let the stage directions handle it. It's your choice.
