Amends for Ladies by Nathan Field (1587 - 1620).
Amends for Ladies falls within the genre of Jacobean city comedy. Three women debate which has the better lot: a maid, a wife, or a widow. Lady Honour, the maid, is loved by her servant, Ingen, and disguises herself as a boy to become servant to him. Lady Perfect, the wife, is suspected by her husband, Love-all, of infidelity; Love-all tries to trap his wife by having his devious friend, Subtle, seduce her. A young citizen, Bold, disguises himself as an old woman to enter into the service of the widow, Lady Bright, in the hopes of gaining access to her bed. Amends for Ladies also features a duel-gone-wrong, bawdy jokes aplenty, and a guest appearance by the "Roaring Girl" herself, Moll Cutpurse. (Rob Board)

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Cupid's Whirligig is almost finished, so I am moving on to another city comedy.

If you're thinking about joining us on this project, you might like to know more about the characters. A star (*) before the name means the role is open - claim away!

SCRIPTS

You can view Google Docs or Google Webpage versions of each act, whichever you prefer to read from.

ACT 1: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 2: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 3: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 4: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 5: Google Doc | Google webpage

As usual, I would prefer to keep the casting of the main roles gender specific. The smaller roles can be claimed by any reader. I will play Bold, and my niece and nephew will play the Page and Drawer. I prefer not to allocate readers more than one role (if the project takes a very long time to complete, we can consider doubling-up later).

MALE ROLES

Bold. 100 lines. Loves the widow Lady Bright. From the outset he is in disguise as an older female servant, as a means of getting closer to his love.

Lord Feesimple. 90 lines. Pursues the widow Lady Bright. Prone to fainting at the sight of a drawn sword. Fears his father will marry for a second time and disinherit him, and so endeavours to become tough so he can challenge the injustice. In the final scene he is disguised as a woman, and a falsetto voice for those lines would be good.

Welltried. 75 lines. Friend of Bold and supports him in his plots. Tries to teach Feesimple to be manly by taking him on a drunken night out.

Lord Proudly. 65 lines. An older nobleman. Rude to his servants and keen on Seldom's wife, Grace. Brother to Lady Honour and challenges Ingen to a duel, thinking he has kidnapped her.

Ingen. 60 lines. Lady Honour's servant. He loves his mistress, but when she mocks him for it he hatches a plan to fake his own marriage to another. Lady Honour comes to him disguised as a footboy, and he employs her. Lady Honour's brother, Lord Proudly, thinking Ingen has kidnapped the maid, challenges him to a dual.

Subtle. 45 lines. Old schoolfriend of Love-all. Love-all, who suspects his wife is cheating on him, invites Subtle to attempt to seduce his wife and uncover her promiscuous ways. However, Subtle thinks Love-all a fool and intends to go through with the seduction.

Love-all. 35 lines. Married to Lady Perfect. Suspects her of infidelity, so invites his trusted friend, Subtle, to live with them and attempt to seduce Lady Perfect.

Frank. 20 lines. Ingen's younger brother. When he first appears he is disguised as a woman and pretending to be his brother's wife, and falsetto reading of those lines would be good.

Seldom. 15 lines. Runs a shop with his wife, Grace. Is content to allow other men to attempt to seduce Grace, because he believes her fidelity is inviolable.

Count. 15 lines. Elderly father of Lord Feesimple. Troubled by a persistent cough. Lord Proudly plans to marry his young sister, Lady Honour, to the Count.

FEMALE ROLES

Lady Bright. 75 lines. A widow, who argues that widowhood is the best state for a woman. She is loved by Bold and pursued by Lord Feesimple. Bold comes to her disguised as an old woman: she employs him as a servant but he sneaks into bed and reveals his identity.

Lady Honour. 55 lines. A maid, who argues that maidenhood is the best state for a woman. Loved by her servent, Ingen, whom she mocks. However, she is distraught when she hears he has married someone else, and visits him disguised as an Irish footboy (a deeper voice for these lines would be good). Eventually marries Ingen.

Lady Perfect. 35 lines. Married to Love-all, and argues that married life is the best state for a woman. Her husband suspects her of infidelity and plots to expose her by setting a honey-trap with his friend, Subtle.

Grace. 20 lines. Wife of Seldom. Together they run a shop. Pursued by Lord Proudly.

Moll Cutpurse. <5 lines. Based on (and possibly played by) the real life cross-dressing and taboo-busting "roaring girl". Storms onto the stage, swears a lot, then leaves.

MALE/FEMALE ROLES

Narrator.

Page. <5 lines. Pageboy to Lord Proudly

Servant. 1 line.

Drawer. <10 lines. A bartender at a Turnbull Steet public house.

Whorebang, Tearchaps, *Bots, & *Spillblood. <10 lines each. Swaggering roaring boys. Hard drinking, tough talking, and absolutely full of themselves. These characters are very similar to one another.

Sergeant. <5 lines. Arrests Lord Proudly, to prevent him duelling.

Priest. <5 lines. Marries Ingen and Lady Honour at the end of the play.

cool ! May I be the Widow please ? I don't feel like playing the wife of a jealous husband yet again LOL and I'm not too keen on "Maids", so the widow would be a nice choice. If you think I can pull it.

Oh and as always...I can PL the final acts, if you wish :)

Sonia
I will be on vacation from Wednesday 27 March till Sunday 14 April
and unable to PL during that time. Thank you for your patience.

On the evidence of these plays, Jacobean London is not the best place to find a husband...

The widow is all yours, and yes please to PLing.

Lord Proudly looks interesting, if you wouldn't mind signing me up for that.

Dressing up as a woman? Fainting at the sight of swords? Looks like Lord Feesimple is the role for me.

Rob, I just started reading your google docs and noticed your remark about how to pronounce Ingen. I don't know the name either, but contrary to you I would suggest pronouncing him Injen, because reading about his character, he is a mixture of ingenuous (puppy-eyed in love) and ingenious (has the idea of tricking his love), and both would be pronounced "injen" in the beginning. Don't you think it might be a pun on those words ? :hmm:

Just my two-cents worth

When I saw "Ingen", I immediately thought of "ingénue".
