Ealswythe wrote:I have a question. If there's a stage direction, such as "suddenly", is it OK for me to just suddenly say that line, right after my previous line, eliminating the need for spoken stage direction "suddenly"? Here's the text:

“who will bear you from your dilapidated home and plunge you into the vortex of some great city.  [Suddenly.]  Have you ever been to Paris?”
if I may make a suggestion (of course I may, since you asked  ), I understand this "suddenly" differently. It's not as if she shouted this immediately glued to the previous sentence. In fact, quite the contrary I would say.

I picture the scene like this:

"who will bear you from your dilapidated home and plunge you into the vortex of some great city"
*pregnant pause for a second*
then *suddenly* out of the blue, she speaks the next sentence quite fast. Not fast after the first sentence, but fast after a short pause

so to answer your question: I think the stage direction "suddenly" might get cut out in the end, but I would not glue them together, I would leave a breathing pause. Picture yourself, saying this sentence, then thinking about other matters and suddenly this thought with Paris strikes you and you need to get it out.

Sonia
Thank you, Sonia.
I was not thinking of shouting out the next sentence, but just just saying it right afte the last. It could be done that way, or it could be done, as you say, after a pause. In the first case, she would have been thinking about suggesting Paris all along, and in the second case, she would be carefully weighing her options, then suddenly coming out with the loaded question. Either way works for me. I’ll leave the decision to the editing process.
Thank you!
:D

I haven't looked at the scene yet but Kitty's suggestion preserves options until later during editing when (nearly) all the parts are in, which is always good.

Joseph Lebanon, Act 2: https://librivox.org/uploads/toddhw/cabinetminister_josephlebanon_2.mp3

You know, I experimented with a number of different versions of this character's voice, but I kept coming back to the original "Me, only more so" version I was playing around with before. (Sonia's heard a sample of this version already.)

You see, I was visited in camp by a wombat the other night, who said ... he sounded like Lou Rawls ... that this was the best version in his view. He then advised me to "go, kick back, and lay down some golden tones with soul and style."

You don't suppose ... is it possible ... that it was a dream? Nahhh...

At any rate, sufficiently slimy, I trust.

Just remember, Todd, when you remove the file after Act 2 assembly, it doesn't go in the Recycle Bin. The Biohazard Bin would be more suitable.

Oh, and Sonia, note that this character's first line in this Act is a yelled "Heah!".

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks. 100% wombat approved, eh? I'll let Kitty determine the level of toxicity before I work with it.

my bunny says thanks for the warning :)

now to your performance:

 yikes he is sooooo slimy. I shudder to think I have to share the same breathing space with this guy :help:

All the while I was listening to your lines I already pictured my answers in my head. I think it will come naturally to me to put the utmost disgust in my voice while talking to you LOL

excellently portrayed Chris, I can only agree with the wombat who seems to be a gifted theatre critic

as for toxicity…I’m not sure whether the yellow/green boils that erupted around my ears have anything to do with what I just listened to

only one thing: you forgot the voice credit in your enthusiasm to get started. Please don’t forget to insert it in one of your next files.

PL ok

this is a good start :9:

I would like to take Earl of Drumdurris with permission. If awarded, I'll bury my Boston accent deep down into the ground, promise. :D

Hi Scott, always nice to hear a new voice in the cast :D don't worry about your accent. I just recently listened to a London low-life Jewish moneylender with a thick Australian con-man accent (done on purpose !) --> read my comment just above your post.

For all we know Lord Drumdurris was brought up at a Boston Ivy league university (do you have one of those ? :hmm: )

If this is your first dramatic venture, the only thing I'd like you to do is leave enough space between your different "bits", not only when someone else speaks but also if you have stage directions inside your speech (like "goes to door" or sth). Our editor Todd will need this space, so it's easier for him to cut out and paste the bits in the right slots.

To make it all livelier you can "act" such stage directions as "coughs" or "whines" or whatever, with your tone of voice, if possible :)

In any case, have fun !

Backpfeifengesicht  where did you get this old-fashioned expression from ?

do you want to stay anonymous for this one ? I don't think this will work, our "fans" will know who it is as soon as you utter your "heah"

This is my first go of work like this, so if in your opinion I'm way off and this should be buried and long forgotten, absolutely no hard feelings.

You should not use the [ ] in the file names - you can see in this message that it breaks the blue underlined link name. I think it is okay in the MW now (it is, on my browser), but our DPL Kitty may have trouble with it. If so she will ask you probing questions....

Thanks, Todd
