Jo's Boys by Louisa May Alcott (1832 - 1888)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/jos-boys-by-louisa-may-alcott-2/

Jo’s little men and women are grown up and entering new stages of life. Along with discovering their individual niches, there are lots of lessons to study, plays to perform, and parties to attend… and love is undeniably in the air. When three of Jo’s most beloved boys embark on journeys of their own, they encounter some of the most difficult challenges ever faced in their young lives. Meanwhile, back at home, Jo and her family must be strong when they receive the news that not all three of the boys may return. Will Emil, Dan, and Nat find their way home to Plumfield?

  1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two-month deadline.
  2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here:
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (and include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during, and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (only for the DPL!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3499
Please read from the Text Links in the Magic Window — scroll down past the character listings!
*Please take a quick look over the Pronunciation Guide before beginning to record: Click HERE
  5. Please claim roles by section number (the numbers in the first column below).
Please note: All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalog. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  6. BEFORE recording: Please check the Recording Notes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz

    *Submit one file per chapter.
  7. Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording:
    [Role], read by [Your Name].

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
Save files as 128 kbps MP3
    josboys_[##]_[role].mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the two-digit chapter number. (e.g. josboys_01_narrator.mp3)
  9. Transfer of files (completed recordings):
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

Here's the link to the character list (with brief descriptions) and chapter commitments: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gimZeaYZ14F4RcjlQlKE96fJF1_9_yeOEIWYY3gXU5s/edit?usp=sharing

Quite a few of the characters are already claimed: Narrator, Alice Heath, Bess Laurence, Dan Kean, Franz Hoffmann, Fritz Bhaer, Jo Bhaer, Josie Brooke, Meg Brooke, Nan Harding, Nat Blake, Ned Barker, and Ted Bhaer.

--But the other 48 are open wide! Still looking for a DPL and editor, as well!

There are a LOT of songs in this project: 7 solos and 1 group song! (Characters who sing solos will be noted in the MW)

*I'm looking for a someone who can sing to read for Emil Hoffmann. He sings four solos, one of which I consider to be somewhat difficult.

For the MC:

For the eight songs in this project, I made up tunes for three of them. For the rest I used tunes of public domain songs. If you want to double-check me and make sure they're PD, here's a list of the sources:

"Peggy Was a Jolly Lass"
- Tune of "Now O Now I Needs Must Part" by John Dowland (1563-1626)
- First published in First Booke of Songes or Ayres of foure partes with Tableture for the Lute in 1597 according to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Now_o_now_I_needs_must_part

"Mary's Dream"
- Tune of "Unquiet Thoughts" by John Dowland (1563-1626)
- First published in Firste Booke of Songes in 1597
- I used the 1613 version of the sheet music from this site: http://imslp.org/wiki/The_Firste_Booke_of_Songes_(Dowland,_John)

"Sweetest of Maidens"
- Tune of "Kathleen Mavourneen"
- I used the 1869 version of the sheet music from this site: http://imslp.org/wiki/Kathleen_Mavourneen_(Crouch,_Frederick_William_Nicholls)

"Bide a Wee"
- Composed by Charlotte Alington Pye Barnard (1830-1869) and published in Garland of Songs in 1869, according to this site: http://www.pdmusic.org/1800s2.html
- I used the sheet music from this site: http://levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu/catalog/levy:120.120

"Swanee River"
- Composed by Stephen Foster (1826-1864) and published in 1851, according to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Folks_at_Home

Thanks for sending the message about this project. Could I claim Amy Laurence? And if there end up being some of those female college student bits needing help later, feel free to check with me. I can do different voices to hide the fact. :-)

May I have Nan?

ETA - I see she's already claimed, I missed that the first time through! I'll pick someone else :-)

May I do "Voice 1" under Minor Characters?

Meg Brooke checking in - and I'd love to DPL the final chapters too! I may be able to help with some parts PL, but it depends a bit on my time commitments with other projects.
