The School for Wives by Molière (1622 - 1673). Translated by Henri Van Laun ( - 0)

In 1661 and 1662 Moliere presented the plays The School for Husbands and then The School for Wives (this one). "The central situations of the two have much in common: the arbitrary and jealous lover to whom circumstances have given almost the authority of a husband: the simple ward rescued from physical constraint by the unfettered cunning of love." In between writing the two plays Moliere got married. Listen to both and see if this comedic genius of the farce changed his attitude. ( ToddHW and The Translator)
  • This project is COMPLETE. Audio files may be found on the catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-school-for-wives-by-moliere/

I ran both plays at the same time since they really are the same thing done twice. Gender neutral.

School for Husbands (already completed) is at viewtopic.php?p=1320717#p1320717
    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/stream/dramaticworksren01moliuoft#page/337/mode/1up
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Todd

If you are open for claims may I play my namesake - Alain - another crafty servant.

I reckon you have now started 6 new plays in a week. It keeps those of us who like being in plays busy, so thanks.

If I didn't keep you busy, think of the trouble you'd be out causing!

Thank you both for your claims and volunteering for another DPL spot.

couldn't resist, but finished my role already today ! This was so - much - fun ! Especially the bickering scene with Alain in the first Act. Alan: I hope you are having just as much fun with it as me  Molière's servants are always an excellent comic relief. Only pity the role wasn't bigger, I could have gone on forever...

now Agnes is quite interesting as a character as she is clearly evolving throughout the play. You managed this very well, in the beginning the naive ingenue, who is almost too ignorant to be believed LOL And near the end she is really putting her foot down and speaking up for her rights and wishes. Well done !!!

Also no errors, so PL ok.

As for the volume: Acts 1 and 2 are under the required 86 dB, but 3 and 5 are good.

"read by Alain Mapstone ! Priceless !"  nice touch right at the beginning

Alain and Georgette have some hilarious moments together. Have you by any chance seen the new TV series of Poldark ? Well, Judd and Prudie, that's how I pictured those two. Here they are, in case you don't know who I mean:

http://www.thecultureconcept.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Judd-and-Prudie.jpg

You only missed one single word (actually one single letter). I don't think it is too important to include, so I will mark it PL ok already. But if you wish to re-upload, it's up to you, for me it's fine (and surely also for Todd):

> at 1:36: (p. 355 middle) "If it were not out of respect for master here, I...." - you forgot to include the trailing "I" at the end of the sentence. Doesn't change the meaning though, you are trailing the "here" very well to convey the meaning

Looking forward to the next scene !

Sonia
