The Basset-Table, by Susanna Centlivre (1680 - 1723)
Sir Richard wants his daughter Valeria to marry a Navy Captain, but she is more interested in young Ensign Lovely. Meanwhile....
(Summary by ToddHW)
Here we go again: the next Centlivre play in the book. More of the same mix of misunderstandings, schemes and counter-schemes, and a slice of life in a bygone era. Back to the days when f's were s's in the text - sorry.

Kitty, as DPL, will not perhaps offer her usual straightforward guidance from a position of strong moral superiority while in the character of Mrs. Sago. But remember - she is always right! Even when she is doing wrong....

Gender neutral.

Thank you.

Note that unlike the high stakes dice game in the last Centlivre, the game this time is cards. And, er, other things perhaps....

and here is the lovely Keecky, very unfortunate in gaming, but very adept at handling her husband  I quite enjoyed the tearful scene in the last act, and I hope I come across as very contrite and sincere (imagine an angel-smilie inserted here).

BTW I do not know what "mase" means in cardgame and I had to say it quite often...I hope this was a long s and not an f, as I don't know "mafe" either, so I went with "mase". Maybe someone else can elucidate us on that, I didn't find it anywhere on the internet. :hmm:

According to Wiki article on Basset as a card game Masse is when a player who wins on a card then bets more money on the same card.

Mr. Sago, please. (I don't think I've been Sonia's husband in anything yet, so a new experience.)

I see from the MW that while she has a fond husband, Mrs. Sago is in love with Sir James (or more likely his wallet and title). So there is hope for you in the role of husband....

Act 2 is perfect, and a great reason to rejoice for not being your husband! Huzzah - (oh, oh. You have spotted me and gotten between me and the door. Drat!)

Act 3 - @1:27, line missed at top of page 234: "He did not die?" (Sounds like the line which is not actually even in the version of The Christmas Carol we're also doing now: "And Tiny Tim, who did not die...".)

Act 4 - also perfect, and who could not revel in your downfall at cards? Serves you right!

Act 5 - contrite and sincere? Ha! But I suppose if I am rid of you, thank goodness, then all's well enough!

Thanks, Todd
