Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821 - 1881). Translated by Constance Garnett (1861 - 1946)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/crime-and-punishment-4-by-fyodor-dostoyevsky/

NOTE: Constance Garnett died in 1946. As of Jan 1, 2017, this is now PD in death + 70 countries, so all readers are now welcome to participate!
The story tells of the inner turmoil of Rodion Raskolnikov, a student in St. Petersburg who commits murder. His psychological and moral agitation is furthered and complicated by his family's arrival in St. Petersburg, his sister's engagement to a manipulative and unworthy man, and his encounters with the impoverished and troubled Marmeladov family. ( Mary J)
  1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): Please read from these google docs: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B0RChmc5lhCQUkpXZDJvUWF4eEE&usp=sharing
    created from Project Gutenberg text:
    http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2554
  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

We have a pronunciation guide kindly provided by tovarisch. Please consult it for your character's name and any others you say so that we may keep name pronunciations consistent.

    https://librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/crimeandpunishment_dostoevsky_pronunciationguide.mp3

Names are recorded in alphabetical order to help you more easily find the one you're looking for. In cases where a character's last name is known, the name is alphabetized by the last name. All others are listed by first name. Note that a patronymic (ie Ivanovna, Petrovitch, etc) is not a last name. Here is the list of names included in the pronunciation guide:

karlkuzmich and Tovarisch have kindly offered to answer any questions regarding name pronunciation.

Casting is gender neutral except for roles marked M or F.

    Any questions?

I'd like to read Dounia please, unless you are reading her yourself?

An excellent choice, but our editor Kristin has requested her. Lots of other great female and gender neutral parts still open, though! Any interest in Pulcheria, for example?

I would like to request the role of Razumikhin, if that would be alright.

Thanks!

Been following this . . . Probably good that Raskolnikov is taken so I won't be tempted by that. But, I would throw my hat in the ring for Razumihin.

I am still finishing the editing of several DRs and I have American Cousin to do, but should have room for this.

All the best with this huge project!

Okay, can you all wait with claiming until the MW is up? Much less work for the BC to keep track of everything/everybody, and just in case there is something that needs working out before an admin can take this, that makes less posts to wade through to get to the important stuff.

Mary, you should add the note that this is not PD for anyone in Europe (death + 70) It's fine in Canada and Australia though.
Cheers, Ava.

More like 18 months.

1946 + 70 = 2016; then it will be PD from the 1st of January of the following year, making it 2017.

As soon as we've been picked up by an MC, the pronunciation guide will be uploaded. I'll be happy to answer any questions with respect to names of people or places, customs, whatnot.
