A Wife Without A Smile: A Comedy in Disguise, by Arthur Wing Pinero (1855 - 1934)
Mr. Rippingill can not get his wife to relax her stony features and smile. Maybe even laugh. "Avis - Lady Whitstable and the pickled salmon. Now consider for a moment, my pet - reflect. What a grotesque contrast! A fine, crusted specimen of our English aristocracy and - pickled fish! The mere contemplation of two images so violently opposed in itself makes for mirth. I did not want to do another Pinero tragedy for a while after finishing Iris. So here is "A Comedy in Disguise".

Gender neutral.

A sense of humor appears optional. Sonia will probably not display one as she plays Mrs Lovette (isn't that the name from Sweeney Todd?) and DPL's your offerings.

actually she has quite an exuberant humour in the beginning, but she will lose that as the play progresses

Hi Todd,

Are we using Rippin-Gill or Ripping-ill? Also Pullin-Ger or Pulling-er?

Thanks

Really up to you. I treat different pronunciations as if they were accents, a part of the characterization.

That said, I am going to say "Pul-ling-Ger" in my voice credit, with a hard G.

Thanks, Todd

Hi Todd, could I narrate please?

Hope you don't mind if I pronounce Pullinger slightly differently from you:

A British English speaker would, I think, invariably say "Pul-lin-Ger", with a soft G. I only mention it as the narrator needs to say the name many times, and it may seem odd for the pronunciation to be different from that the character himself uses.
