Short Story Collection Vol. 055

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/short-story-collection-vol-055-by-various/

NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.
This collection is for any short story in the English Language in the public domain, preferably less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute as many as you wish, and there is no need to "sign-up" before recording as long as the work is clearly in the public domain.

Please ask here if the story was published after 1922 or if you are unsure for any other reason about its public domain status.
Multiple versions are always welcome, so you can record a story that has been recorded before. (If the same stories are submitted twice in the same collection, we will carry the second version over to the next collection) .

You may prefer to submit your recording to one of the other more specialised short story collections.

After 20 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.

Proof-listening: Standard; or (preferably) against the text, noting any major discrepancies. PL FAQ: viewtopic.php?p=318667#p318667

1. RECORD
  • Be sure to set your recording software to: 44100Hz, 16-bit
  • No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
  • At the BEGINNING Say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox Recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"
  • At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]"
  • If you wish, you may also say: "Read by...your name."
  • Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording or 10 seconds if longer than 30 minutes.
2. EDIT and SAVE your file:
  • Need noise-cleaning?Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear distracting background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The free full version 2.0.x of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Note: Noisecleaning with the earlier versions of Audacity (1.2.x) is not recommended.
  • ID3 Tags:
    • • Title/Name: [Title]
      • Artist: [Author Name]
      • Album: LibriVox Short Story Collection Vol. 055
  • Save or export your recording to an mp3 file at 128kpbs using the following filename:
    • File Name: Put file name all in lowercase, and the title all in one word (no leading articles i.e. the, a, an, and NO SPACES): shortstory055_shorttitleinoneword_readersinitials.mp3,
      e.g. shortstory055_scarletletter_ge.mp3
3. SUBMIT your recording:
Please upload your finished recording using the LibriVox uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please copy to post in this thread):
http://upload.librivox.org

If you have trouble reading the image above, please send a private message to any admin
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: rg - RuthieG.
*If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

4. POST the following information in this thread:
  • • The link you copied from the uploader to your file
    • Name of your story
    • Author (birth year - death year)
    • Translator if applicable (birth year - death year)
    • Source from which you read (e.g. Gutenberg etext url)
    • Length in minutes and size in MB of your file
    • If this is your first Librivox recording, I will also need your name as you would like it to appear on the catalogue page and the URL of your homepage if you have one and would like it linked to your name on the catalogue page.

Here is the Tale of Sinuhe, from Notes on the Story of Sinuhe:

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/rg/shortstory055_taleofsinuhe_ah.mp3

Source text: http://www.etana.org/sites/default/files/coretexts/15243.pdf
Also same text here: http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/008889271

Author: Unknown, possibly some guy named Sinuhe :) , dates to around 1800 BC
Translator: Alan Gardiner (1879-1963)

Duration (29:43)
File size: 27.2 MB

A very interesting story. There are references to the "Sand-farers" which is probably a reference to the nearby nomadic desert dwellers of Canaan and possibly Arabia who are referred to elsewhere in Egyptian texts as the "Habiru" or dusty footed ones.

Thank you, Arnie. Please check back from time for proof-listening notes. I do not yet have a DPL.

Thank you, BT. I love Saki :). If he had lived as long as Wodehouse, he would have been just as well-known, I think.

I can Proof read a section of these short stories,
But I have never done so before,
I am very new to LibriVox and and somewhat looking for someone
to tell me what to do.

It seems that sections 3 and on are open to be heard, or is it that they haven't been recorded.
If someone knows what I can listen to that would be welcome advice.

Please and Thank you

Also what is DPL?

Thank you :).

Here are the guidelines for proof-listening: viewtopic.php?p=318667#p318667

This includes the instructions for standard proof-listening, which is what is needed in this project:
For what types of error should I be listening?

There are some standard things that need to be listened for in each section, with possible additions depending on the nature of the text. The first post of each proof-listening thread should include a list of the requirements; if it doesn't, please ask the BC or soloist. By far the most common level of PL required is 'standard PL':
-- Do the intro and disclaimer match the instructions in the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there any long silences or pauses that ought to be edited out? If so, note the time.
-- Are there any repeats, or serious stumbles that ought to be edited out? If so, note the words and the time.
-- Is there excessive background noise, a constant hiss or buzz that detracts from the reading?
-- Did you need to turn your volume up unusually high to listen to the recording? (Or did you find the recording too loud?)
-- Are the correct closing words used at the end of the recording, as per the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there 5 seconds of silence (10 if the recording is more than 30 minutes long) at the end of the file?
DPL means a dedicated proof-listener - someone who undertakes to listen to all the files in a project, which means it may go on for some months. Typically these collections don't fill for 2 - 3 months.

Only two sections have been recorded so far in this collection, so they are the only ones ready for proof-listening (the ones in the Magic Window that say 'PL Needed').

If you would like to try with one of those, please do. Just post your notes here in this thread.

I'd be willing to be the DPL, if thenumber2ring is just going to PL one section.
I know 1 & 2 need to be PLed, but what about 17-20? Did someone already PL them??

Thank you, Sarah. Yes, they already have their PL notes. Most likely they will be discarded, as the readers have not returned since submitting them back in December. I'm just giving them one last chance with this collection.

I will add you as DPL then, thank you. I don't know which section thenumber2ring is going to PL yet, though.

That's fine, I'll just listen to Section 1 and leave Section 2 (the shorter one) for thenumber2ring to try out. I sent thenumber2ring a PM letting him know. :D

Hey Ruth,

My first submission, hopefully it's OK.

I think I have to check back here later on to see if the proof reader is happy with the submission, right?

Hi Rob! (I'm the Dedicated Proof Listener)
As soon as Ruth enters your selection into the Magic Window, I will go in and Proof Listen (PL) it. So yes, just check back here for the suggestions I have to make your recording better, i.e. technical aspects, mistakes you forgot to edit out. Once you've made the fixes, I will mark the section "PL OK" which means no further work / action is necessary for the reader (unless you have another section to record). 8-)

Thank you, Rob. I have added your catalogue name as asked in your solo thread. Your personal catalogue page is https://catalog.librivox.org/people_public.php?peopleid=8164 and can be accessed by clicking (or better, right-clicking and opening in new tab) your name in any Magic Window. Many people bookmark/favourite the page as an easy way of keeping tabs on their claims.

Sections in collections are not marked complete until cataloguing, as we often have to move sections around later.

Hey Ruthie, do you mind taking the tilde ~ off the title so we don't get a bunch of people flocking in to be DPLs? :D Or did you leave it there for a specific reason?

Nope, no specific reason. Just forgot. I'd have seen it eventually ;).
