Borrowing among musican genres is nothing new though. Ravel stole from jazz, Gershwin stole from classical, Led Zepplin played delta blues... I think that one of the real joys of music is the way everything feeds off of everything else.

The topographic map of electronic music is now as much fragmented as rock's.
Anybody seen the movie School of Rock with Jack Black? There is a scene where he is having a similar map of rock-genres in the background. Its amazing to follow it.

I haven't seen that movie, but now that I see that frame from it I know I'll have to make it a point!

Incidentally, he needs to put Screaming Jay Hawkins and Ivor Cutler down there with Zappa and Captain Beefheart!

I'll check out Rush. Thanks for the tip.

Check out: The Rose Garden, The Flow, The Litter, Wailing Wall, White Lightning. (not prog rock really but near to it)
And without wriggling like a worm in the dust i say: i am a proud YES fan and been to several concerts of them (the nowaday ones of course, i am not old enough for the 70ties concerts. its fun to listen to rock-grandpas)

Stephan -- I didn't say _I_ liked Rush, but I live with two rabid fans (yes, Rush is my ten-year-old's favorite band...) I do like "Roll the Bones". We've been to see them live in concert twice! They are VERY good live, I must admit.

kara: 10yr olds go well with rush. I have some friends from Sudbury (which is kind of like saying they are from the city Rush was invented to serve), and they claim that from age 10-14 the literally could not listen to any other music because Rush was just so ... frikken ... good.

Its not the modern R&B soul but the old swinging funky soul.
You never get to hear any of this in mass-media over here.

WFMU.org podcasts and streams almost their complete weekly schedule and archives their playlist and shows. You can download all shows till way back then. Its a very open radio. And some weird unusual stuff beein played there.

You mean real soul music, like from the 60s? Whatever happened to that music, anyway? I'm a huge R&B fan--not what they consider R&B today, which is (c)rap--but real blues and soul. Have they stopped making soul music, or am I just out of touch?

Long, long time ago, when I was at school (the sixties), for a couple of years, there were some "pirate" radio stations broadcasting from just outside Britain's territorial waters. One of them, Radio 390, used to broadcast an hour of old blues music on Sunday evenings. We'd be clustered round the radio up to the last minute before going in to Sunday service.

Now, if anyone's in central London and able to stay up late, there's a dingy, smoky little bar in (I think) Kingly Street near Oxford Circus, called the Blues Bar. From about 8 or 9 o'clock through to (probably) past midnight ... live blues, old-style r&b! I've only been there a couple of times, as it's a little awkward for me, but it's wonderful to be immersed!
