... we would be threading very long necklaces in this alphabetical game!

The first player starts with letter A and the shortest word beginning with it. In this case, A (the indefinite article).

The second player has to look for a (real) two-letter word starting with A. In this case, it could be AS or AN, for example.

The third player needs to find a word starting with A that is three letters long.For example, ANY

Only real words are accepted, not acronyms.

We cannot skip numbers.

Hint: chemistry provides VERY long words.

This game is new to me, but it looks to me like Dulcamara is saying that the word just has to share the first letter, not the others.
