That Poem / Song / Story I Recorded Comes From WHERE ?!

Everything except LibriVox (yes, this is where knitting gets discussed. Now includes non-LV Volunteers Wanted projects)

This topic is about surprise.

Have you ever had a favourite poem, song or story that you assumed was an invention of your own language that you then found out came from another language/ culture?

Or perhaps you thought you knew the other language of origin, only to find out it was another one altogether?

I recently discovered that a folk song made popular in the 1960s in Australia, and which I had thought was perhaps of French or Italian or German origin, is in fact from Tsarist Russia.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?
