Constructive advice on becoming a semi-reclused Author!

I have wanted to author a parody of Dune by Frank Herbert, but I'm a bit scared at the magnitude of this project. I've heard it only takes about 2 years to write an fictitious book, give or take 3 to 6 months. As far as I know, writing a parody on any literature is legal in Australia, but I'm not so sure about the law in the US. I've read Dune about a dozen times so I'm fairly confident in my ability to pull it off. Even though several friends mentioned that it's better to start with something a bit smaller, like a short-story, several short-stories in one novel or even a book specifically themed for prose, poems, limericks etc. If there's any constructive advice out there (& I mean constructive!), let me know as I don't want to start off too big & die of frustration!
