Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names
were--

Flopsy,
Mopsy,
Cotton-tail,
and Peter.

They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a
very big fir-tree.

'Now my dears,' said old Mrs. Rabbit one morning, 'you may go into
the fields or down the lane, but don't go into Mr. McGregor's garden:
your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs.
McGregor.'

And then the murders began.

About seventy years ago a young man of strong physique and prepossessing appearance arrived at New Orleans.
And then the murders began.

As we sat over our after-dinner coffee and cigars in the major's cosy library, one evening last winter, I discovered my host to be in a reminiscent mood, and ventured to ask him a question that I had frequently meditated. He smiled and was silent for a moment before answering.
And then the murders began.

When I met Taylor at the club the other night, he looked so cheerful I scarcely knew him.
And then the murders began.

Two names were used for the only girl at Overlook. In addressing her, the men of the place always said "Miss Warriner."
And then the murders began.

I like the "dark and stormy night" one. How many books really begin with that line, anyway?
I just got that one, from A Wrinkle in Time!

The best one so far is Danny, Champion of the World: When I was four months old, my mother died suddenly and my father was left to look after me all my himself. And then the murders began.
