Perhaps it signals:
A). An Irish joke.
B). A potential violation of the 10th Commandment.
C). You're approaching someone from the starboard side.
On the matter of that last one, if you've ever wondered why the Klingons always seem to attack the Starship Enterprise from the starboard bow, it's because, if they attack from the port side, they see the red light and come to a halt.
