I have to say I enjoyed watching it and except for some short fragments I found it to look very modern and rather smooth (except for occassional awkward repetitions).

I agree with you, it does look like it could have been done today. In fact, if you can, go to YouTube and look for "Simon's Cat" - very similar style!
