Hi, Everybody--
I lurked my way through the postings in this thread, and saw a lot of discussion about novels and writer's block and NaNoWriMo.
I would heartily recommend NaNoWriMo. I've been writing one thing or another since high school (or maybe even before that -- too long ago to contemplate), and always wanted to try my hand at novel length stuff. I would get bogged down in the details or the editing-as-I-go syndrome or the research, but then I discovered NaNo four years ago. I reached 39,000 words my first November, passed 50K the second year, passed 100K the third, and did about 86K this past November.
None of those were complete novels, and were mostly random verbal spewings anyway, but a couple of them had good central plots and some interesting characters. I put in a lot of time over the past few months, and now have a very large, very rough first draft which combines my NaNo "novels" from Years Two and Four. I finally (just a few days ago) got past that first REALLY big hurdle -- getting through the main bulk of the story, however rough, at least once.
I'm going to set it aside for a few more weeks and let it percolate before I start editing, but I think it's going to be pretty good when I'm done.
