What kind of block are you having, pensk? Do you have an outline of your story? Have you written back stories for your characters? Are you having trouble filling in your outline?

Pensk:

Paula has some good advice. Also, one thing I realized recent is to make sure it's a story with characters and plot that you feel strongly about. If not, it's hard to invest the time and energy into it.

I have some very exciting news!

First of all, when I was in high school I co-founded my school's media club. We made all kinds of short films and ran a school-wide film fest. The other founder was a chap named S.

Very talented kid.

Now, any of you who watched the Oscars, do you remember the ad in the very first timeslot? It was an ad for Toyota Camry, about the communities of Need and Want, and how the Camry brought them together in a beautiful marriage. Very pretty cinematography.

Anyway, I was chatting with an old friend of mine from high school, and he tells me that my old colleague, S., was the producer of that ad. Needless to say, my jaw dropped. I was working with this guy on all kinds of projects in high school, and now I'm making just enough to stay below the poverty line, and editing the dryest material on the planet, and he's making goodness knows how much, editing some of the most interesting material on the planet. Well, at least my hours are better than his.

So I ask the fellow I was chatting with if S. has an e-mail address where I could reach him. He does. So I reach him. We mail back and forth a few times, and he wants me to write a script for a short that we can do together (which we'll enter into all the appropriate festivals). He also asked me if I ever considered writing ads. I think he might be able to get me a job (he's already hired another guy we went to school with, so the outlook is good).

So I'm pretty stoked right about now, and finding it extremely difficult to focus on my work.

Very cool, Basil! I love it when folks I know do really really well out there in the world - it lets me know that it's possible that it could happen to me too.

Ignore work today. Pay attention to your muse instead!

Well, yesterday, I spent my entire lunch hour racking my brain for an idea, and nothing came.

Today, however, I managed to find an idea floating around. It's extremely silly. Think Kids in the Hall and Monty Python having a baby raised by Napoleon Dynamite.

I'm writing the script right now!

Well, I don't know what the future of this potential film's distribution is, but maybe it will one day be available for viewing on atomfilms.com or ifilm.com, after we do the festival deal (if we do the festival deal).

If so, I'll be sure to let you know.

Thank you! I'm more than half-way through the first draft.

I'm meeting S. and another old high school friend who now works with him for a beer or something next week. I'll be taking along my script!

If your novel is 7-8 pages, it's a short story. Problem solved! :)

Seriously, you can't make a story be a certain length. It will *always* show when you forced it. Haven't we all read a padded novel? One that was clearly a good short story, but they padded out to a truly terrible novel, because they were paid by the word?

A story is as long as piece of string.
