Mikado, our peacebringer, you are always with your long long woody bow.
In the morning, you stroke it; in the evening, you stand it by you.
I hear the long long string sounds.
In the morning, you might go hunting; in the evening, hunting you might go.
Now I am far apart from you.
I hear the long long string sounds.
Mikado, our peacebringer, you are inseparable from your long long woody bow.
Mikado, our peacebringer, you and your long long woody bow are inseparable.
In the morning, you fondle it; in the evening, you stand it close by.
I hear the sounds of it's string.
In the morning, you might go hunting; in the evening, hunting you might go.
In the morning, you may go hunting, in the evening hunting you may go.
Now I am far apart from you.
Now we are far apart.
Now I am far from you.
I hear the sounds of the long long string.
I still hear the sounds of the long long string.

Mikado, our peacebringer, you are inseparable from your long long woody bow.

I'm not sure either, however I do love these poems, their great attention to detail is so Japanese, I wish I could write that way. I think I haven't the time, which lets me know how much effort went into the poetry in the first place.

Hi, G.T.O.-san,

Thanks for your degnified translations! 8-)

This project started as my birthday present for Chick. And it's still only a love letter from an unk. :P So, take it easy! I want your indulgent smile.

Japanese people measure one's English skill by TOEIC score and Eiken grades. Honestly speaking, my English skill is poor: TOEIC 440 (E Class) and the 4th grade of Eiken. Yes, I belong to a shabby English group in fact. I know only 3,000 English words. I can't speak English sentences; I only say a few English words with a moan! This means it's a hard work for me to translate Manyoushu. (But I have great advantages: I'm a native Japanese speaker and I have a poet's soul or the like.)

Please let enjoy myself. I have no need to become an English master.

Now many upper Japanese people use English language! (Cool Japan!!)

The wind won't stop blowing snow ever.
My husband,
I guess you sleep alone in other land.

We met in the evening;
You hid in shame the next morning.
For a long time I am absent from you.
In and around Nabari, there might be a shack and you.

A hunting arrow is in a good manlyman's hand;
A good manlyman aims a still board;
The hunting arrow is released from his hand.
The clarion let me never be bored.

When you catch the Tsushima Island on the sea road to abroad,
Please offer a prayer to a sea god.
Please do this surely.
And come back home as soon as possible securely.

CSCO-san,

These poems are really appreciated. For me they are like small windows opening onto another, distant land: the Japan that is in the hearts of the Japanese.

Thank you very much for sharing them!

Regards,
Jasna

Hi, Dulcamara-san,

Thanks for your 5 applauses!!

Manyoushuu (まんようしゅう, 万葉集) is the summit of Japanese poetries. Because a poet in Japan has not been able to escape from Manyoushuu since it was established.

I'm very proud I'm a poet, who can drop a hint to know the poems' real souls to the world and open an easy gate to the flower garden to many kids. I suppose Nakanishi-sensei (the Japanese top scholar in this field today; Chick's family name is also Nakanishi :P ) must give me a small pension. Because I've helped ex-P.M. Asou's 'Cool Japan Project' here. (My translation might have many flaws from an academic point of view. But, as an invitation, it is not useless. If there is a kid, who loves it, my life is not in vain.)

Hurry up, my men!
Now it's time to come back to our country!
The old port and the old pinetrees are
Waiting for us impatiently, maybe!

Wild ducks would be flying.
But they float among reeds and
Their pinions are frosty this evening.
I remember Yamato, my homeland.

Arare Matsubara is a pinery shore.
Otohi Otome is a cultivated whore.
She came from Sumiyoshi Port and at any time never made me bore.
We saw it together but I want to see it more and more.

Ootomo's territory has the Takashi Shore.
It's a beautiful pine shore.
Tonight we stay here.
I can't stop remembering you, my dear.

I have read your letter.
If you had not written the letter,
I, a stranger here,
Would have died of missing you, dear.

Ootomo's Mitsu Shore has a magic shell.
The shell can erase your lover from your mind.
But, you, the magic shell,
You can't erase my wife at home from my mind.
