we've had several comments lately regarding files being truncated ... the reason has been that the listener was using Real Player which apparently chops off the ends of a file.... Is there any problem with the beginnings being chopped off too?

Two potential solutions:

1) Make a note somewhere that indicates Librivox's preferred (and non-preferred) audio players (possibly on the "How to Listen" page).

2) Figure out just how many seconds are truncated by Real Player and make a point of requiring X number of seconds of silence at the end of each future recording.

let's go with B and put a note with A.

mandatory 5 seconds silence at end of file! that should do it.

I always do 5 seconds to be safe. But this does seem to be something that most readers forget to do.

Oops. I've been cropping the audio as close to the end as possible. hmm...I'll have to rework a few things.

We had this problem a few months ago and decided to leave some silence at the end. However, now I think it would be better just not to use RealPlayer. Even I don't remember to leave the dead air, and I was the one who discovered the problem.

We've had "please leave a few moments of silence at the end of your recording" in our recording notes forever. But it's really hard to enforce :)

At least we all know what to say when people report this problem!

yeah, 5 seconds is maybe overkill... Paula only noticed a problem on one of those files that she was collecting... whatever book that was, and I _know_ no one left five seconds. It's probably only an issue if the file is clipped really close to the end. I think "a few moments" is probably good enough.

It all depends on how we define silence. It might be easier for the valildator to just add 2 seconds of silence to the end of every file. 5 seconds my be overdoing it.
