If one has a precise date of decease for an author, does one need to wait until January the first of the following year for their work to be ticketty-boo PD wise?

USA (and hence LV) doesn't go by author death dates, but those who reside outside the US have to abide by their country's copyright laws also.

In Life+70 countries, authors are PD January 1 of the 71st year (70 full calendar years after death). So on January 1, 2021 authors who died any time in 1950 will be PD.

In Australia, I think that the target isn't moving for years yet. Authors are PD in Australia if they died in 1954 or earlier. Those who died in 1955 will be PD January 1, 2026 (70 full calendar years).

Does that answer your question?

I think so. But for LV, I have to go off the US system I know, so this new author I’ve found will have to wait till early 2023 I guess.

Australians, Americans, and Canadians could record the works published 1919 and earlier, but Europeans would have to wait.

(He died in '52, so he is PD in Australia since that's before 1955.)
