My children are urging Betty and I to tell them what we want done when we die. They want to know where our money is too; little do they know I spent it all on recording equipment and coffee. You know, burial or cremation, type of services, etc. etc. In thinking about this I realize that I think flowers are a big waste of money but I definitely want people to donate to LibriVox instead. Has this ever been done, and if so, what was the method? Please share.

What would any of you suggest as the easiest method to recommend to people for doing this? Would it be to go through Internet ARchive? I don't know. It's got to be simple and easy like "go to this website (.*******) and click this button. donate a lot" because we all know few people will want to follow multiple steps. I know I don't.

As a side note, I am definitely going to make a recording to be played at the after funeral party. Lots of creepy stuff and puns will be in it of course and sage advice for all the grandchildren. No money, just sage advice.

It's a little worrisome that the kids are asking.

Love the idea of the recording with sage advice although if the grandchildren are really young it may damage them forever. Maybe one of your solo's instead?

Thanks linny. Is there any way of checking to see if the PayPal route really does drop the money into LibriVox's pot? I just donated $5 and it seemed to just say it went to IA. But this is definitely closer to what will work; writing a check takes just too much time. But if they don't have a PayPal account (I do), it would slow 'em down. I want tons of money to pour into our coffers! Maybe there could be a "PhilC Memorial Plaque" with daily puns and a spinning beanie or something?

As for the kids asking, yeah, now that you mention it, that is a mite interesting ...hmmmm. Actually Betty is 80 and I'm in my 80th year so it is not a bit too early. They just want to be sure they do what we desire, not what they think we want. And I want to keep it inexpensive.

Next I will try the other option.

The key is to find a way that a donation is not just earmarked for LibriVox but that it is utilized for LibriVox needs. Of course, the mission for both groups is largely the same, but a LibriVox donation really ought to go toward the improvements that have been discussed here as being particularly needed and/or helpful.

You could probably send a PM to Hugh. I'm sure he could advise you on the correct direction for donations. I make a contribution yearly but I don't have paypal so I go through Archive and tag it for LV.

I donated to IA, and when they gave me a comment box I put in "For LibriVox". And I've received a receipt from boty Paypal and IA. I did not put in that LivriVox should be notified. That escaped me. What does that do? does someone actually check to see that it arrives in our little box of 'money'?

Hey, what about Amazon Smile? Amazon donates a small amount (about half a percent) to a non profit for each purchase I make on Amazon. Smile is just Amazon with another name; everything is the same just the donations go to my non profit. In the past year I have generated about $50 for our local computer club at no cost to me but naming them because they asked. Amazon says they have given out over 150 million dollars t his way. Only requirement is to buy stuff through Amazon Smile.

Someone has to be designated to receive the money and there must be a checking account I think. Here is the link https://org.amazon.com/

An easy way to get some money. If it has been discussed before just clue me in on what the outcomes are.

i have to say, pretty cool ideas.. while i have doubts that i would enjoy your funeral any better with that sort of humor it is your style for sure!
and listening to a recording.. i "like" that idea!
but most funerals i attended, just a handful of people would be able to listen to that.
and just like other people, or just not like other people at all, i dislike funerals in general.

In the US, amazon smile has them listed as Internet Archive. This may be different in other countries.

I have scratched the recording idea and instead am having great fun making a video! We have the newish custom here of having a video loop play at the visitation or somewhere in the house where people are gathered for the funeral Usually it is of lots of pictures of the deceased in all stages of their lives. This is nice thing actually as people can watch it while munching on the sandwiches and little meatballs and it makes for wonderful conversation "oh, I remember when he broke his leg while roller skating and had to wear that body cast for 2 months." Followed by funny stories related to that and other happy times in his life. These are usually scratched together by the funeral home from pictures submitted quickly by the family. With leisure time to do this I can put some really embarrasing pictures of everyone as well as myself in there AND make a running commentary. "Hey TRicia. remember how you fell in the lake while crab fishing? Well, this is you as we fished you out". So the recording is out, but the video is definitely in.

(Yeah, I don't like funerals either and am cutting down mine to the absolute minimum, followed by parties at each child's house. Where the video will show of course)

I just made a donation to Archive.org for their 2:1 matching campaign and there was no way to indicate that my donation was for and becuz of Librivox. No comment box showed up during the transaction either at Internet Archive or as part of the Paypal entries.

Thought there used to be something that told IA about the Librivox intent and gave Librivox some way of knowing about the donation.

EDIT: IA sent a message a couple minutes after the fact asking why I donated, so I was able to tell them Librivox
